I was waitlisted but got in when somebody's roommate cancelled in May? June? Anyway, wonder if any of you are my roommate! Happily reading for the past year, mostly reality-based fiction, but my favorite reading has been my father's letters home 1918-19 from France, which his mother saved.
Rae Walker Aug 20, 2014 at 12:59 AM

I am a in a single but look forward to meeting everyone. Personal letters from France are really the heart of any window into wars far from home. All amazing perspectives.

Hello from another single woman booked in a single room and so thrilled to be at Oxford AND dig into WWI studies. Just finished Tuchman's Guns of August (wonderful and witty) and enjoying Churchill's series on the Great War. Only in second book on 1915', so have 3 to go. I am in London for rhe Cultural Heritage program starting 9/1 so see you all there in Oxford!
Rae Walker Aug 16, 2014 at 10:41 PM

Lucky you seeing London first! I hope I get to hear of the Cultural sites you've visited in London. When do you get to Oxford? I'm at Wheatley on Sat, so maybe Oxford by lunch to check in on Sunday. I will be over jetlag.
Kathy Watkins Aug 16, 2014 at 11:11 PM

I am not sure when I get to oxford that day. I booked a tour of buckingham palace for the am and then plan to take a bus or train to oxfordin the pm. Havent quite figured that out yet. But it looks like we have some free evenings after our lectures that we can check out the town. Not sure how we will cope with all the 20-some students

Rae Walker Aug 10, 2014 at 11:25 PM

I am seeing a lot of articles and WWI commemorations in the news now.I am looking forward to meeting everyone and figured that if there are many men attending the conference, they just aren't bloggers, maybe? There are so many interesting things to see in Oxford, too. My husband isn't coming, so I opted for a single room, but hope to find interesting conversations post lectures and tours.

Carol Anderson Aug 10, 2014 at 11:32 AM

Gee, I thought I might be the only single woman so interested in WW1. Now I am seeing women's comments and wondering who will be my roommate. This is neat. I'm re-watching course on WW1.
Sue Massey Kirkpatrick Aug 16, 2014 at 11:36 PM

I was also suprised that this is turning out to be lots of women. I was excitied about being in Oxford and WWI was just an extra. I will be sharing a room too and am traveling solo.

Caroline Jun 25, 2014 at 08:40 PM

I recommend Huw Strachan's survey called The First World War.
Judith Powers Jul 10, 2014 at 04:51 PM

I liked this too.

Ruth Weber Jun 19, 2014 at 10:06 AM

Looking for good fiction set at the time of WW1? Here are some books I enjoyed: 1. Ken Follett, The CEntury trilogy, Book 1; Pat Barker, Renaissance trilogy--I enjoyed all three books; and BIRDS WITHOUT WINGS. I've forgotten the author, but the book is set in a Turkish village and shows what happens to a peaceful village when nationalism rears its head. Ataturk appears periodically. And oh yes, ONCE AN EAGLE by Myrer is a great read. Ruth Weber
Rae Walker Jun 19, 2014 at 11:47 PM

I hope I finish at one of these before the conference. such great and varied suggestions! Thanks.

Ruth Weber Jun 04, 2014 at 02:38 PM

I'm Ruth Weber. Is anyone else from Minnesota going on thiss program? If you are, I'd love to hear from you. We could meet at the airport--it's nice to have someone to talk to during the long waits.

Judith Powers May 08, 2014 at 11:39 AM

3 small novels which give a glimpse of the lives of the effect of the war on peoples' lives: Wilfred and Eileen by Jonathan Smith, Julian Grenfell by Nicholas Moseley and William an Englishman
by Cicely Hamilton.
by Cicely Hamilton. I bought them through Persephone Books but they are also on Amazon.
