Good thing mot of us aren't going until the following week! Clouds and "showers" here and there ( allweather coat and packable umbrella). And I didn't know about the ceramic poppies - sounds worth seeing!
Rae Walker Aug 29, 2014 at 11:32 AM

I will enjoy all weather options rain or shine. Sitting in a cozy historical location and hearing histirical discourse. All good!

Boy, check the weather in London before you :-, it looks like a storm next week. This definitely alters my packing ...just a tweak.
Kathy Watkins Aug 27, 2014 at 10:56 PM

Rain in England? :) lets pack those layers. Coming from the CA. Drought, it will be a change indeed!
Rae Walker Aug 27, 2014 at 11:01 PM

Yes. A pleasant change!

Jodith Janes Aug 25, 2014 at 01:41 PM

Will we be visiting the Tower of London to see the Tower of London Remembers installation "Blood Swept Land and Sea of Red" the
ceramic poppies marking the centenary of the outbreak of WWI
Kathy Watkins Aug 25, 2014 at 03:46 PM

Kathy Watkins Aug 25, 2014 at 03:50 PM

Yes, I have been viewing that ceramic poppy display on the BBC website and it looks very poignant. It seems we have the afternoon of 9/20 free when we are in London so maybe some of us will want to go to the Tower.
Rae Walker Aug 25, 2014 at 09:45 PM

That sounds like a good plan.
Rae Walker Aug 25, 2014 at 09:51 PM

I think there will be a lot of Commemorative Events to find and explore. Can't wait!

Paula Moulton Aug 19, 2014 at 03:01 PM

I was waitlisted but got in when somebody's roommate cancelled in May? June? Anyway, wonder if any of you are my roommate! Happily reading for the past year, mostly reality-based fiction, but my favorite reading has been my father's letters home 1918-19 from France, which his mother saved.
Rae Walker Aug 20, 2014 at 12:59 AM

I am a in a single but look forward to meeting everyone. Personal letters from France are really the heart of any window into wars far from home. All amazing perspectives.

Kathy Watkins Aug 16, 2014 at 03:55 PM

Hello from another single woman booked in a single room and so thrilled to be at Oxford AND dig into WWI studies. Just finished Tuchman's Guns of August (wonderful and witty) and enjoying Churchill's series on the Great War. Only in second book on 1915', so have 3 to go. I am in London for rhe Cultural Heritage program starting 9/1 so see you all there in Oxford!
Rae Walker Aug 16, 2014 at 10:41 PM

Lucky you seeing London first! I hope I get to hear of the Cultural sites you've visited in London. When do you get to Oxford? I'm at Wheatley on Sat, so maybe Oxford by lunch to check in on Sunday. I will be over jetlag.
Kathy Watkins Aug 16, 2014 at 11:11 PM

I am not sure when I get to oxford that day. I booked a tour of buckingham palace for the am and then plan to take a bus or train to oxfordin the pm. Havent quite figured that out yet. But it looks like we have some free evenings after our lectures that we can check out the town. Not sure how we will cope with all the 20-some students
Rae Walker Aug 24, 2014 at 01:02 AM

it will be interesting indeed. I think we will be presently surprised. I had to change to the Cotswold Lodge, as my B&B in Wheatly is no longer available. So i am veryclose to Oxford Central and St Hugh's. I have friends coming down I hope to meet on Sunday or one of the days that we have a free afternoon-not confirmed yet, but I hope you get to meet them too!.
Kathy Watkins Aug 24, 2014 at 02:31 PM

Lucky you in the Cotwolds! I found out the Michaelmas term does not start til mid October, so we can walk around the quads at the various colleges without disturbing the real students. Hope we get to explore lots. I have been bingewatching the Inspector Lewis series as every mystery seems to involve an Oxford don and the scenery is full of the colleges. Cant wait! I leave next weekend for my first program in London and look forward to meeting all the Oxford "scholars". Cheers!
Rae Walker Aug 24, 2014 at 09:24 PM

I'll be sleeping in the Cotswolds, but should be adjusted once the programs starts. I'll be checking this
Rae Walker Aug 24, 2014 at 09:27 PM

blog for updates from you in London, if you have time.

Rae Walker Aug 10, 2014 at 11:25 PM

I am seeing a lot of articles and WWI commemorations in the news now.I am looking forward to meeting everyone and figured that if there are many men attending the conference, they just aren't bloggers, maybe? There are so many interesting things to see in Oxford, too. My husband isn't coming, so I opted for a single room, but hope to find interesting conversations post lectures and tours.

Carol Anderson Aug 10, 2014 at 11:32 AM

Gee, I thought I might be the only single woman so interested in WW1. Now I am seeing women's comments and wondering who will be my roommate. This is neat. I'm re-watching thegreatcourses.com course on WW1.
Sue Massey Kirkpatrick Aug 16, 2014 at 11:36 PM

I was also suprised that this is turning out to be lots of women. I was excitied about being in Oxford and WWI was just an extra. I will be sharing a room too and am traveling solo.
