Is there any female wishing to share a Deluxe suite, since the singles all appear to be taken or waitlisted??

Emile Gurstelle Jul 21, 2015 at 05:11 PM

I spoke with a very pleasant RoadScholar agent last week. I suggested in view of the price drops for next year they consider giving us an upgrade to the deluxe suites on the train. She said she would pass the suggestion on to the appropriate party. Today, I received a voicemail stating that I inquired about a discount (I didn't), but they would not be able to accommodate because they still obligated to pay the 2015 rates and they are not getting a discount on them.

Hey Emile et al:
I also just figured out we only have four weeks until Africa, although I do not leave until four weeks from Wednesday.
I hadn't noticed the 2016 price drop. We can discuss it when we meet and maybe appeal to Road Scholar for a refund if there is not a good explanation.

A couple of months ago I asked our coordinator Antonn how many would be in group and she said 9. I expressed surprise that they would go ahead with so few but she said they were. I don't know if anyone else has signed up in the meantime. See you soon!

In response to my question, Antonn wrote today that there are still nine people registered for our program.

Well, just four weeks away until we leave for Cape Town. We are arriving two days before the tour to give us a chance to adjust to jet lag and explore some parts of the city the tour may not get to. We have picked out which luggage we will use. I am going with a narrow 26-inch suitcase, which hopefully will fit comfortably in the overhead on the train. I am also taking a 21-inch narrow carry-on. We bought a couple safari style outfits from the Columbia outlet store near us. We washed them yesterday and they came out quite soft. I am curious if anyone has had any reaction to the 2016 price drops. Also, has anyone booked the "deluxe suite" instead of the Pullman on the train? We look forward to meeting everyone. I imagine we will be a small group since safari camp I believe only holds about 18-20 guests. See you soon.

Hi Patricia,
Just an FYI. Our trip is from LA but we've been booked on only 2 flights: LA to London (11 hours) , 3 hour wait and then London straight to Capetown.(12 hours) (total 26 hours) still exhausting but a bit shorter.
Emile Gurstelle Jun 05, 2015 at 01:09 PM

We were originally going to fly JFK-LHR-CPT on British Airways, but changed it to JFK-JNB-CPT on South African. The $1500 round-trip economy seemed like a good deal and we were able to get a window-aisle bulkhead by booking early. We also figured that BA only had one or two flights a day from Heathrow to Cape Town, whereas South African Airways had numerous flights in case one got cancelled. Nevertheless, in spite of the strain of very long flights, the travels have always been worth it.

Hi Emile, Kynstnya, Joan and Barry:
I am Pat Wahlen, a widow from San Diego. This is my 10th Road Scholar trip and they have all been wonderful. I arrive mid afternoon on the 21st via LA-NY-Jhn…a 36 hour trip. I look forward to meeting everyone.
Emile Gurstelle Jun 05, 2015 at 01:03 PM

Welcome Pat. We are glad to hear that all your travels with Road Schoar have been fulfilling. We look forward to meeting.

Hi Emile. Good idea to get there a few days early. My cousin (who's been to S. Africa many times) says that LONG STREET is a lovely shopping area and recommends some restaurant called Saigon (should you be looking for places to go.) I imagine the hotel might have some shuttle service into town. ?? We don't arrive till early Friday morning (the 21st)
Emile Gurstelle May 26, 2015 at 08:35 PM

Hey Joan. I appreciate the suggestions for Cape Town. Thanks. We'll look forward to meeting you and Barry.

Joan Major May 24, 2015 at 04:33 PM

Hello Emile and Krystyna. We are Barry and Joan from Los Angeles. This will be our third RS program - did Costa Rico and then a river trip from Paris/Lyon to Barcelona. Both Superb.
We'll be the folks walking like stiff zombies after 22 hours of flight time! But we're totally looking forward to this adventure and to meeting you both.
Emile Gurstelle May 24, 2015 at 09:21 PM

Hi Joan and Barry. We are flying into Cape Town from FJK by way of JNB two days before the tour begins. We are staying at the Vineyard Hotel for the two extra nights. Being that the hotel is at least 20 minutes out of town, we will explore options for getting into the city to do some exploring on our own. When do you arrive in Cape Town?
Emile Gurstelle May 24, 2015 at 09:37 PM

That's JFK, not FJK. I don't see a way to edit a post except to delete it. This is our first excursion together on Road Scholar, though Krys took a course through RS at the Barnes Foundation (art museum in Philadelphia). We are avid cruisers and participate on Cruise Critic roll calls. This forum is as close as it gets to Cruise Critic in terms of meeting up online with others in our travels. When you think of it, the train adventure is somewhat like a cruise.
