We're coming from the Bay Area with our two granddaughters, age 9 and 12. Hope to meet grandparents with similar age grandkids. Thanks to Jennifer G. for her comments about the accommodations.

Weather forecast is dry and sunny. Sounds perfect. Leaving east coast Thur and flying into Cam Riv next Sun with almost 11 yr old grandson

If, like us, anyone is flying in to Campbell River a day early, I recommend the suspension bridge at Elk Falls and a trip to the salmon hatchery nearby. Just a few minutes drive from town.

All -- just returned from this program. Program was terrific, but I would like to alert you to some issues as the RS packet doesn't tell you some of what you'd like to know. The accomodations are VERY minimal -- our room had one outlet and an extension cord. there was no clock, no phone, no chair, no table. If you need a fridge, e.g., for medicine, you'll need to see if they can get that for you. otherwise it's a short hike up to the main lodge. also no wifi, TV or radio (which was a good thing). Bottom line -- do not expect this to be like a hotel. If you like a glass of wine in the evening, get it in the restaurant (much better selection). Strongly recommend a flashlight for the camping trip. Expect bumps and bruises and a whale of a good time! Food, btw was plentiful and excellent -- think organic and locovore.

Thanks Jennifer. Like I expected. Love no TV, Wi-Fi and radio. Kids (and adults) need to feel the wilderness

Just enrolled in August program with 10 yr old grandson from NE. Anyone else signed up for this program in this age bracket?
Shirley Mcgrath May 24, 2015 at 10:10 PM

My granddaughter turns 13 August 3rd. We're signed up for the August 16th Program. We're from California.

I'll be there with my almost-9-year-old granddaughter. She's from Seattle, I'm from Oregon.
Shirley Mcgrath Jul 08, 2015 at 08:46 PM

Hi Joanne, Thaks for your message. I'm from Oregon originally, Portland Beaverton area, went to Sunset High School and UofO. Hard to believe the trip is just a little more than a month away. i have never done a Road Scholar trip before, have you?
Jack Kenny Aug 11, 2015 at 05:02 PM

This is our first RS program also. My wife and I and our granddaughters, 9 and 12, are really looking forward to this. Hope they get to find similar age children like your grandchildren.

Just enrolled in this for next July. Wondering from past participants about the travel there and back. Even coming from the Bay Area, we'd have to come the day before. thoughts? Advice? Thanks....
Shirley Mcgrath May 24, 2015 at 10:11 PM

We're signed up for August, from the Bay Area. We need to go the day before to get there by 3 PM following day.
Shirley Mcgrath May 24, 2015 at 10:11 PM

Also have you signed up for flights? I'm just starting to look.
Ann Hurd May 25, 2015 at 05:20 PM

Contact RS we are flying into Campbell River from Vancouver by 3:10pm
Jennifer Galovich May 25, 2015 at 05:33 PM

We are on the July trip, coming from the Bay Area. Not possible to get us there on the day of the program, so we are going the day before. We will rent a car and see the sights. Renting a car is WAY cheaper than air transfer to and from any local hotel, it appears.
Jennifer Galovich May 25, 2015 at 05:37 PM

while I'm signed in -- anyone else on the July trip with a grandson age 10 or so?
Jennifer Galovich May 25, 2015 at 05:41 PM

In case anyone else is simlarlly stuck for an extra day -- we found a reasonable hotel (comfort Inn) at a reasonable price and will rent a car for $40.

We will be arriving by (my daughter's) car but returning by seaplane. If you're going from Seattle, Kenmore Air is much more convenient than the alternatives.
Shirley Mcgrath Jul 08, 2015 at 08:48 PM

My granddaughter Emma and I are flying out of SFO on the 15th, flying to Vancouver and then over to Campbell River and taking the shuttle to the lodge where we will spend Saturday night.
