See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Jane..we are going on this trip Oct.3 also leaving from JFK. Is that the trip to which you are referring? We are from Chicago and starting to get pretty excited about it. We have been to the region before so we already know how beautiful it is but it is our first time with RS.

Bette & Caesar--we took this trip in May and had a wonderful time. The weather was mostly sunny and cool, great for walking. We generally walked a lot in the morning, winding up at a great destination for lunch. Meals were terrific, especially the lunches. Our guide Tiziana and our walk guide Catherine were both wonderful. I hope you have weather as beautiful as we did! Enjoy the trip.

My husband Rob and I are flying to Rome from JFK on Alitalia. We live in Bedford, NY and are looking forward to the trip.

Jane and Rob...You're in for a rel treat! this was our first but certainly not our last, RS trip and we wish we were going with you :-).
Susan McCalley Apr 12, 2014 at 04:32 PM

....ALL meals are included, even tho' the itinerary usually says that you are on your own for a few meals. the daytime meals on the hikes are phenomenal as are the dinners and b'fasts at the Hotel italia where one fo the owners is the chef! She is known to your guides and comes out once in awhile to accept the guests accolades. Pls say "Hi" to Tiziana and Katrin for The McCalleys from last Fall's trip....Oh, my!

Is there a list of participants available for the May 2-10 2014 program?

You have to call Road Scholar for that, but you can ask questions here about trip experiences!

If you are not going to be a regular 'mountain climber', then you don't need anything expensive nor telescoping. Search on-line now (cyber Monday) at Sport Authority or Dick's Sporting Goods. You will only really need them a few different times on this trip. Enjoy!

I've signed up for the May trip. I've never used walking sticks as my "hikes" are usually on the very flat beaches of South Florida. Is there a brand that anyone would recommend - or one to avoid? Thanks!
Margery (Marge) Miller Dec 02, 2013 at 09:58 AM

You could try going to REI or another good "outdoors" store; they have their own brands and will help you choose.

I have never done a walking tour and wanted to know the longest distance walked without a stop. Thx
John Oliva Nov 11, 2013 at 12:16 PM

"Stops" vary in time and purpose, from a minute or two to view a scene, listen to an explanation, or use the restroom, to one hour for lunch. A more practical average estimate of an answer to your question would be three miles for stops over two minutes.

Hi Y'all, Excited about the program. A little concerned about the altitudes. Us flatlanders (25' above sea level) have concerns about keeping up but are determined. Will be at Hotel Italia in Rome the 8th and would welcome getting together sometime before the program. Lorna and Ray ...rayincociate@gmail.com

No problem if you stay hydrated and watch the "vino". You will have a few days to get acclimated. Good idea to get your flu shots before leaving.

Umbria, Oct. 11. Is anyone from NYC or surrounding areas?
John Oliva Sep 14, 2013 at 07:44 PM

Sue McCalley is from Greenwich, CT
