Does anyone who has taken this trip know if there is a self-service laundry nearby? We will be doing the Cinque Terra (not walking) trip after, and it would be nice to do some laundry. We will be in Pisa for two days between the two.

I'm arriving in Rome on Sept. 29 for three days of exploring on my own before joining the Road Scholar group on Oct. 3. Anyone else arriving early in Rome? I'm also planning of traveling to Florence for four days after our hiking adventure

Looking forward to walking the hills of Umbria. My wife and I are bringing hiking poles. Be aware that you must check these. We were hoping to only have carry on, but had to change our plans when a friend informed us that poles couldn't be carried on the plane. Interesting comment from Susan fMcCallley about meals being included even though they were listed as not being provided in the RS information packet.
We also are a bit confused about the types of plug attachments for electrical equipment - cameras, iPhones. Type C for our France trip and type L for Italy. But then I read that Type C can be used in a type L receptacle. I'm going to email the trip leader and check it out. Anyone else know which plug is which and if some can take multiple plugs?

Hi! re: poles. I was on this trip and elected to get the airfare included. There was no charge to check luggage, therefore my hiking pole was in my duffel bag ( checked). Best for me. Re: food, when Sue and I were there, the lit. stated that SOME meals would be on our own. In fact, ALL meals were provided on that trip. I don't know about yours.,Marge

we were there in 2013, don't remember the plug for Italy except that one small, inexpensive one served all purposes, I guess the "L" :-)

Going on 9/12 - anyone else on this trip?
Donna DeCesare Aug 26, 2015 at 08:40 AM

Hi Allen, I will be on the 9/12 trip Walking the Hills of Umbria. I look forward to meeting you. Regards,
Allen Brown Aug 31, 2015 at 01:25 PM

Hi Donna, I've been trying to get in shape walking up and down the hills around where I live. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone - this is my first Road Scholar trip.
Donna DeCesare Sep 04, 2015 at 08:18 AM

Hi Allen, I, too, have been trying to get more miles in on my daily walk in order to be in, hopefully, a bit better shape. This is my first Road Scholar trip, too! I have heard very good feedback on Road Scholar trips.

I am doing back-to-back trips: Ireland North to South 9/14/15 to 10/01/15; Walking the Hill Towns of Umbria 10/02/15 to 10/10/15. Is anyone else coming to Rome a day early?
Mary Tift Sep 15, 2015 at 07:35 PM

I will arrive in Rome on Sept. 29 for three days of exploring on my own before joining the group on Oct.3. Would love to meet a fellow Road Scholar maybe for a glass of wine or a gelato or whatever while there.

Donna DeCesare Jul 02, 2015 at 03:33 PM

I am taking to back-to-back trips: Walking the Hill Towns of Umbria - 9/11/15 to 9/19/15; Hiking the Cinque Terre - 9/19/15 to 9/27/15. Is anyone else doing this? If so, have you made arrangements to get to the second location?
John Schwartz Jul 09, 2015 at 11:35 AM

I an not doing those particular trips, but am going independently to Cinque Terre after the Umbria trip. I am taking the train from Foligno to Monterosso.
Donna DeCesare Jul 10, 2015 at 07:21 AM

John, Thanks for your note. Will you have a Eur-Rail pass or will you simply purchase a ticket for the trip?
John Schwartz Jul 10, 2015 at 12:58 PM

Point to point ticket with changes in Florence and Pisa.
Gerald Buendel Aug 13, 2015 at 01:17 AM

Donna, Sherrie and I are also doing the Umbria trip too. We will be taking a train from Foligno to Venice and ae planning to purchase a ticket for the trip rather than using a Eur-Rail Pass. Since it's the only train trip we're doing we don't think it's worth doing. We look forward to meeting you.

Donna DeCesare Aug 13, 2015 at 03:08 PM

Gerald, Thanks for your note. Road Scholar suggested I use Rail Europe and I have made my train reservations. Look forward to meeting both of your as well. Regards,

I would like to hear a report on how this back-to-back program works. My wife and I are considering doing the same thing next Spring.

The walks were not particularly hard and were usually around 5 miles per day, sometimes less. We generally walked more in the morning and then had a leisurely and wonderful lunch, followed primarily by sightseeing in one of the hill towns. It was a great trip to a less frequented and crowded but very beautiful part of Italy.

Marilyn Mehr Apr 16, 2015 at 07:21 PM

I don't recall walking any more than 5 miles a day and usually there were ample breaks to rest and restore. It's a glimpse into another Italy, quieter and more peaceful. Go!
