I have discovered a way around the cell phone problem in Australia and NZ. Download the Messenger app. It's through facebook but is free and downloadable online. It works with android and iphone both. The beauty of it is it is internet operational so all you need is to set your phone on the wi fi or hot spot setting. It's similar to skype or whats up app. I've been using the Messenger app to text my daughters Nancy from MI (Jan 16 trip) I'm packed, are you?? Don't forget your Australian electrical adapters!

My husband and I are trying to decide what service to use for our mobile phones when we are in Australia. We want to be able to call our daughters back in the states and use the internet and GPS. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I am going on the Jan 16 Australia and then 2 RS trips in New Zealand. I am also concerned about cell phone coverage.

will have 9 days in between tours, trying to decide where and how' to spend them, so havent booked Sydney-NZ flight yet. Thinkng about camper van rental on North island of NZ.

Try changing your chip to OPTUS for 40AUSD you have 100mins international calls and unlimited text and phone calls in Aus. This lasts for 28days and you can top up for as little as 5AUSD for more minutes .

Marty and I are excited about our first Road Scholar trip to Australia in October. We'd appreciate any feedback/suggestions regarding the trip insurance offer. We're debating about whether or not we should buy it.
Helen Sternheim Jul 07, 2014 at 01:49 PM

All insurance is a gamble. On an expensive trip, trip insurance of some kind may give you peace of mind. There are other travel insurance companies you can compare the rates.
Linda Wesseler Dec 20, 2015 at 01:18 PM

Travel Guard had lower premiums and was more all-inclusive with our airfare and pre-post trip activities in southern CA. We were also able to exclude pre-existing condition clause for a rate break since we're fortunate not to have any preexisting issues.
