Alot can happen in the next 4 months. We are also keeping our fingers crossed that the November trip is not cancelled. We have been watching the news closely, particularly on Al Jazeera. The Al Jazeera coverage is the most in-depth on political developments.

The American who was killed was a student, fluent in Arabic and a student of the Mideast. Lin Vaughan

There's (no surprise) a new State Dept travel warning on Egypt: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_egypt.html
Cross your fingers....

I was enrolled in the Febr program however it was cancelled just a week before our departure date. Now I am enrolled in the Oct 5-21, but the odds are not looking good!
Patricia Wright Jul 09, 2013 at 03:26 PM

Johanna, was the Feb trip cancelled because there was not enough people or because of political strife?
Johanna Husslage Jul 10, 2013 at 08:12 PM

I was contacted by Elderhostel to tell me that the State Dep. had adviced against it

It looks like there are at least six of us signed up for November, 2013 trip. Dave and I have started to read the Eyewitness Travel book on Egypt and The Penguin Historical Atlas on Ancient Egypt. The Eyewitness guide is up to date to 2012. The maps in the Atlas are quite beautiful. I am thinking of re-reading at least one of Mahfouz's trilogy before the trip. I read them many years ago and really enjoyed them. And, of course, we are trying to read and follow the news from and about Egypt.

Trying to learn a bit of Arabic for the November trip. Easier to read than I thought, but speaking is another story.

Make sure you look at the video taken by the January trip--good idea of what we'll be doing.
James B. Jun 19, 2013 at 01:07 PM

Watched it within the hour. Interesting and entertaining.

I'm signed up for November. My first Road Scholar trip. Currently reading Egypt: Land and Lives of the Pharoahs Revealed which I'd forgotten I own (hint:it's a lot better than the History Channel sub-title) . Waiting to receive new edition of the DK Egypt guide in a couple of weeks (details on Amazon). I'll be on the EgpytAir flight from JFK. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Thanks to Robert Thompson for the terrific video!! Looks like dramamine would be a good idea for driving in the desert in the back seat! If you haven't watched the video, go to the photos section and get a real taste of what we're going to do!!
Patricia Wright May 14, 2013 at 09:22 AM

Ann, I will look for that video. We are looking forward to the trip. We are starting to read up on history and of course, following the news in Egypt. Pat
