See all of our Most Popular programs.
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. Minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Marilee, I was on the same trip about 2 years ago, and I think we had about 25 or 30. Yes, it was a bilingual dining room with 2 or 3 (I forget which) other groups from European countries, but that added to the fun - we danced together and generally enjoyed each other's company. Of course we had separate bus trips in port.

I must say that if Helena Balthazar is leading, run, don't walk to sign up. There is nothing about Portuguese history, culture, politics, wine! that she doesn't know, and her personality and leadership skills were unsurpassed. It was one of the most fabulous trips of my 20 or so with Road Scholar.
Marilee Henneberger Aug 16, 2015 at 12:02 AM

Thanks, Douglas. It sounds like a great trip

Marilee Henneberger Aug 13, 2015 at 05:26 PM

The boat has 70 cabins… about how many of the passengers will be Road Scholars?

I have been on almost 30 RS programs over the years and definitely prefer the small groups, for many reasons, especially overseas. I don't mind a somewhat larger group if it's manageable size so you can hear guides and avoid crowding around sites and so forth.
Margaret Wheaton Aug 13, 2015 at 05:56 PM

The Road Scholar group was a pleasant size. We had our own bus and tour guides. We occupied one corner of the dining room. Everything was multilingual, repeated in English, German, Portuguese(?), sometimes French.
Marilee Henneberger Aug 13, 2015 at 11:59 PM

Thanks for the reply Margaret, but are we talking 20 people, 40? Somewhere in-between?

R Shardell Jul 04, 2015 at 12:34 PM

Looking to go on this trip April, 2016. What is average duration of walks per destination? How is weather...hoping to escape extreme heat a rainy season.
Margaret Wheaton Jul 08, 2015 at 01:19 PM

I went in May, 2015. The weather was quite warm but pleasant. I wore a pedometer, just for fun. We walked from 3000 to 9000 steps per day. I think that is a maximum of about 3.5 miles for the entire day.
R Shardell Jul 09, 2015 at 01:16 PM

Margaret: Would you say it was in the 80's? Would you recommend the trip? ...any packing tips? Did you forget something or super happy that you packed a certain item?
Margaret Wheaton Jul 16, 2015 at 09:56 PM

Yes, I would recommend the trip. The tour leader, Helena Balthazar, is outstanding. The cabins are extremely compact; don't pack too much. Have fun!

Bobby Carney
Thinking about going 10/28-11/09/15. Any experience with the weather during this period??
Douglas Bracy Jun 04, 2015 at 10:47 PM

That is almost exaxtly the time of year when I went on the same tour last year. The temperature was just about right, nether too cold nor too warm, and we had some beautiful sunny days. We had a couple of rainy days also, so take an umbrella. I absolutely loved the trip and my first visit to Portugal.

Margaret Wheaton Apr 18, 2015 at 01:33 PM

My friend Ellen and I are going on May 16, 2015. She's from Seattle and I am from central Florida.
Susan Alves Apr 21, 2015 at 09:47 AM

Have a great time. I look forward to hearing about it when you return

Susan Alves Mar 30, 2015 at 06:20 PM

I am going on this in Oct. It is my first trip with Roads scholar. I am looking forward to the trip

Maria Walsh Feb 27, 2015 at 08:26 PM

I am wondering if the double occupancy can be configured as two twin beds on this trip?
David Owens Mar 01, 2015 at 11:52 AM

Last September we took this trip, in "Accommodation 2." The beds were already configured as two (narrow) twin beds.
Maria Walsh Mar 01, 2015 at 12:11 PM

Thank you for your response David, did you enjoy the trip?
David Owens Mar 01, 2015 at 02:29 PM

Maria - Yes! We found the countryside and cities delightful, the cuisine superb, and the coordinator well organized and informative.

I was on the identical trip last fall, and found it was of the great trips I have taken with Road Scholar. Be prepared to have sme great food on the cruise, washed down with as much good Portuguese wine as you can drink, and to have fascinating insights into the history, culture, and economy of Portugal. Helena Balthazar is one of the most delightful nd knowledgable tour guides I have ever had. I envy you, and wish I were doing the trip again!
Julius Seder Aug 19, 2014 at 02:23 PM

We are going on 9/6 also out of Philly. We have done other river boat trips . The best way to travel. See you there
Richard Kreisel Aug 19, 2014 at 05:00 PM

See you there - we fly thru JFK and Madrid to Porto
