I am needing to make some contingency plans. I am booked for the trip February 14th and plan on driving. Due to illness in the family, I may need to fly and would like to share the rental fee from Midland to Big Bend. If I do drive, I would be willing to pick someone up at the airport.

I'll be attending Jan 24 - 29 with my sister and brother-in-law from Austin TX. I live in Atlanta but grew up in Houston TX. I am getting to know parts of TX I never went while living there thanks to my sister and her husband who have taken me to some nice state parks and on some nice trails in the Austin area. Looking forward to seeing Big Bend soon.

I'm attending the Big Ben Jan 29-Feb 5, arriving EB on Amtrak at Alpine TX the day before, renting a car (already reserved) and spending 1 night outside Carlsbad Caverns NP after Big Bend, so as to depart on the EB Amtrak from Alpine TX on 2/6. Anyone interested in joining me for any segment is welcome if you will assume part of the car rental expenses.

Dhana which date are you planning on going to Big Ben? Jan. 31 to Feb 5 or Feb 7 to Feb 12. If getting To Midland in the afternoon I would agree to stay over. It is a 250 mile drive from the airport to motel where the group would be staying. I would be flying from the Chicago area.

feb 7-12, am about to book flight now & can try for afternoon flight. Will let you know in a day or two.

Sounds like a very ambitious and exciting adventure. Like that you are open ended on the time frame but for me to book a flight I would have to have a date when we would be back in Phoenix where I would want to fly into and back from. Gerri
Bonnie Smietanowska Nov 30, 2015 at 09:26 PM

Gerri, I see you're signed up for the 7th, I can't do that week.
Gerri Short Nov 30, 2015 at 11:09 PM

Jan. 31 would work for me.

Bonnie Smietanowska Nov 29, 2015 at 03:53 PM

Jan 31 but can also do Jan 24: I will drive round trip from Tucson with room for a passenger, M or F. It'll be a road trip on a flexible schedule, with hikes and adventures on the way, airports in Tucson or Phoenix. I'm a recently retired scientist, and this will be my first Roadscholar trip. I set up an account so you can send messages.
Gerri Short Nov 29, 2015 at 11:11 PM

May be interested Bonnie. What adventures and hikes are you interested in doing. How many days would your flexible trip be lasting beside the Road Scholar Big Ben hike? Gerri
Bonnie Smietanowska Nov 30, 2015 at 05:40 AM

I'm open. Two days there and two days back, plus a few days on the return, plus maybe a few extra days exploring Big Bend. I want to explore Marfa and Los Cruces, maybe White Sands, Portal AZ and Chiricahua, maybe Douglas and Bisbee. It might be necessary to ride out an El Nino storm, so I don't want to be boxed in to a hard schedule. McDonald Observatory is in the area for a star party, or a longer drive to Carlsbad Caverns. There is also a world-class birding area in T or C north of Las Cruces. And lots to do around Tucson- botanical gardens, air and space museum, planetarium, old town, canyons, Saguaro NP.
Bonnie Smietanowska Nov 30, 2015 at 05:54 AM

Shuttle from Tucson to Phoenix Sky Harbor is $40, and Phoenix has cheap refundable fares to everywhere.

Signed up for January 10-15 , 2016 trip. Flying into and out of Midland and will rent car. Anyone want to share rental car?

Susan Armstrong Oct 23, 2015 at 08:33 PM

To Paula Swanson, Couldn't find a way to reply in your box. About poles: Many of us bring two and only use 1. They are only $10 in Walmart. At least here, where people hike all the year. They are most useful to me when going downhill. And especially if there is ANY loose rock.
