If anyone has been on this trip recently we would greatly appreciate any feedback positive and/or negative!

Mark Townsend Sep 16, 2014 at 09:45 AM

For the steeper climbs, I would like to have a map (now) which shows how fast the elevation changes along the different parts of the trail. (I can't recall what such maps are called, but they help us estimate how we will need to pace ourselves.) Does anybody know where we might be able to buy such maps?

I am on the Oct. 19 trip
On day 5 we will be visiting a primary school.
I am going to bring some pencils, erasers and other small school supplies. I just checked with Road Scholar office and they said it is okay to bring school supplies.
Looking forward to meeting our group.

I was on the April trip this year. We had a delightful visit with the pupils at the school. We asked them to sing something for us which they were happy to do. They treated us to a tibetan falk song..... then they took us off guard when they asked us to sing for them. After some quick consulting we sang "You are my Sunshine". Everyone enjoyed the moment.
Annemarie Etsell Sep 10, 2014 at 07:31 PM

(that was supposed to be "folk song". I don't see an edit button)
Joy Rector Sep 11, 2014 at 07:32 PM

Does anyone know how many students are enrolled at the school we visit? I
Annemarie Etsell Sep 13, 2014 at 10:12 PM

I don't know how many students are in the whole school. The class we visited had just over 40 grade 6 students. They come from the surrounding villages and are boarding at the school. Most go home over the week-ends.

i contacted verizon and it's much cheaper to send text (.50 each) and receive text (.05 each) than to talk (depending on city, from 2.29 to 5$ per minute)
this is with an iphone 5s.

I am on the September 24th trip. Anyone else following this list also on this trip? I live in L.A. so I will fly straight to Beijing.
Kathryn Simmons Sep 09, 2014 at 01:39 PM

I'm on that trip, Toni, and I will be arriving LAX from Seattle around 9:15pm on the 23rd.
Toni Johnson Sep 09, 2014 at 03:50 PM

I look forward to meeting you.

Hey Toni, you can text message by the mobile you are carrying but sometimes in China and Tibet it does not function so better for you to buy a chinese sim card when you arrive in Beijing, CHINA MOBILE is the best company, tell your group leader and your local chinese guide they will arrange it, it is very cheap, you can use this sim card till you are in Tibet, from Nepal your own sim card might work properly if not in Nepal also you can buy a sim card for on 2 dollars
Toni Johnson Sep 09, 2014 at 05:26 PM

Thank you. The price is right!!!

Toni Johnson Sep 03, 2014 at 02:42 AM

I am wondering if I will be able to test to people in the U.S.?

B Shannon Sep 02, 2014 at 09:37 PM

Has anyone read any of the readings on the list? recommendations?
Carol Hermann Sep 10, 2014 at 04:35 PM

I ordered the suggested books, but haven't yet read them. Have enjoyed some of the other listed readings and enjoyed Demystifying Tibet by Feigon, Radio Shangri-La by Napoli, The Skull Mantra by Pattison, an Bhutan from the Cultures of the World Series in the Children's department. I am arriving early in LA from Detroit (about 6 pm) and figured I'd hang out in the Delta lounge for a while until others arrived.
Carol Hermann Sep 10, 2014 at 04:57 PM

Update on my last sentence - I'm on the Sep 24th trip so will be at LAX on Sept 23rd

Mark Townsend Sep 02, 2014 at 04:12 PM

Mark and I are on the Oct trip. A real bucket list trip for us. We have worked for months to get in shape. However, I have over done and sprained a leg muscle. How moderately challenging is the trip? We each have our own hiking poles.
Manoj Aryal Sep 09, 2014 at 03:57 PM

Hi Mark, except the two climbings POTALA PALACE AND TIGER'S NEST, rest of the walks are smooth, you can use your own poles during Potala and Tnger's Nest Climb
