Sharon Fratepietro Jul 21, 2014 at 01:43 PM

I'm considering taking this trip. I wonder how fast the walking pace is. Distance is OK, but I'm slow going up hill and I wouldn't want to hold up anyone.
Jane Berman Jul 21, 2014 at 02:21 PM

There are two leaders and very accommodating Sharon. One will always hang back to take care of any us stragglers, while the rest of the group continues. Also, there are stops along the way for photos, discussions, etc., so you have a chance to catch up. A great trip!
Sharon Fratepietro Jul 22, 2014 at 08:27 AM

Thanks for the quick info! One more question--my husband is a fast walker and sometimes likes to forge ahead of the larger group, then wait for the rest to catch up. Is this possible?
Jane Berman Jul 22, 2014 at 11:01 AM

As long as he doesn't overtake the leader! The safety protocol is to ensure a leader at the front of the "groupo" and another at the back. Wrt your question about pace, other walking groups typically quote 3 mph, so you should be able to comfortably walk a mile in 20 minutes.

Hi Sharon (great last name!). I had the same questions & called RS. I walk at a decent pace, but mostly flat terrain, so I'm slow on hills too. Although RS rates the hikes, one person's "moderate" may be another's "fast."

Thx Jane for info also. 3 mph is good to know; I can handle that!

Hi, I'm Beth B from the SF bay area. Going on the Sept 2014 trip. This will be my first overseas trip; very excited!
Karen Wells Jul 19, 2014 at 05:04 PM

Hi Beth, we are Vic & Karen from Colorado Springs, CO. We too are going on the Sept. 2014 trip. We have been to Italy once-loved it. We have not done a walking/hiking tour. Should be fun - just hope we can keep up. Look forward to meeting you.

Hi Karen, thx for checking in. Only 2 months to go! Sono eccitato!

I'm Judith Albino from Denver and will be joining the May 11 Tuscany/Umbria group as well. I'm looking forward to the trip and to meeting the rest of the group.
S Olsen Apr 18, 2014 at 05:09 PM

I'm going on the May 11 trip, too! First RS adventure and first time using my passport! Also looking forward to meeting the rest of our group. Judith, I used to live in Colorado (Woodland Park area and Gunnison) and was out there in January visiting friends.

Hi, S. I'll look forward to meeting you. You must have done your share of mountain hiking when you were in Gunnison -- Woodland Park is good hiking country as well. Where are you living now?
S Olsen Apr 28, 2014 at 12:45 PM

I live in Iowa and have for 26 years! So, it's been ages since I did mountain hiking and I'm a bit older, too. Ha!
S Olsen Apr 28, 2014 at 12:46 PM

And, by the way, I'm Sue!
Premium Email Subscriber Apr 29, 2014 at 10:23 PM

Thanks, Sue. S felt a little awkward. I suspect that most of us are feeling the effect of a few years. Judith

I'm going in Sept. and would love to hear comments from either/both of you, about the trip!

Babs Guardenier Feb 19, 2014 at 01:31 PM

Hi! My husband, Ned, and I are going on the trip scheduled for May 11th. Anybody else out there on this trip? We live in Asheville, NC. This is our first Road Scholars trip. We'd love to hear from anybody else who signed up. Ciao!
Penny Tolchin Mar 27, 2014 at 02:06 PM

Hello, Penny & Sid Tolchin from San Diego. We just returned from 2 RS trips in AZ, one hiking the slot canyons and slick rocks around Page and one to learn about the Navajos and Canyon de Chelly. Both were great trips as have been the other 15 RS trips we hav taken. We know you will have a wonderful time. The only other international trip we have taken with RS has been to Costa Rica, and about half of our trips to date have been intergenerational, which we highly recommend. We will start with the group on 5/11 at the airport but will spend almost a week afterward in Rome. We look forward to meeting you!

Jane Berman Aug 28, 2013 at 01:47 PM

We are Jane and Robert from Ottawa, Canada, and this will be our first Road Scholar adventure. We're looking forward to 5 days in Rome before meeting up with most of you at the airport. Is anyone else not travelling with the group to Rome?

NIGEL BLAKLEY Aug 24, 2013 at 02:05 PM

We are Nigel and Ann Blakley from Olympia, WA. We are both retired biologists, getting ready for our first trip to Italy. We fly to Rome Sept 10, then take the train to Bolzano for a few days of hut-to-hut trekking in the alps. We'll join you all at the hotel in Pienza. Hopefully we'll still be able to walk when we arrive! On the homeward journey we'll ride with you to then Rome airport, then spend the night at Hotel Robinson before flying out the next day. Look forward to meeting you all in Pienza!
NIGEL BLAKLEY Aug 27, 2013 at 04:44 PM

We have just been informed (8/27) that the itinerary has been changed and now starting in Montefalco! Major headache for us as we have made all our bookings to meet the group in Pienza! Helga and Milton, hope you get this message! Nigel Blakley
Jane Berman Aug 28, 2013 at 01:33 PM

Nigel, check again. Yesterday's email clearly says we start in Pienza and end with Montefalco.
Jane Berman Aug 28, 2013 at 01:37 PM

So there's no confusion, yesterday's notice was about the OCT.1st to 11th program.
NIGEL BLAKLEY Sep 04, 2013 at 02:36 AM

We are on the Sept 19-30 program. The Final Itinerary document has been changed to state that we are now beginning in Montefalco and ending in Pienza. Road Scholar has promised us compensation for the expense this has cost us but we are still trying to get things resolved.

Nancy Ward Jan 07, 2013 at 01:34 PM

I am Nancy Ward. I'm traveling alone, but put I'd take a roommate. I'm now in Tucson, AZ where I do a lot of hiking with Southern Arizona Hiking Club. These are on the C level (a lot of times slow C although I can hike a bit faster). I spend mid-November to mid-May in Tucson and mid-May till mid-November in Fairhope, Alabama (on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. I'm just taking this program; not any before or after trips.

Milton Berglund Sep 01, 2012 at 03:15 PM
