We traveled on this trip last Fall. You don't have to worry about wearing white as social faux pas but you are in public spaces, sometimes public transportation and with no laundry service, white might not be practical.

Laurie - My wife and I were on the May trip with Bob Gitter and saw many people in white clothing. My wife was especially surprised to learn that many Chinese brides now wear white dresses. Do take Bob up on his offer to share his photos. He has some great ones. I can share mine,as well, if anyone sends an e-mail address. We had a fantastic time on this trip. I echo his recommendation to add the Summer Palace and Jewish Refugee Museum, if possible. Enjoy! Jim

Hi! I think that most tourists need not worry about wearing white, hats, coats or whatever. Was just viewing pics from another RS's trip...people were wearing just about anything they found in their closets...seems to me...We tend to wear lighter colors anyway because of the weather...beige is always a good compromise. Scarves to contrast and coordinate work...stick to single palette and you will be fine. When are you going? Will you be on our particular tour (leaving on October 7)? Best, RBYoshioka

I keep hearing about "funeral white." Are white hats and shirts acceptable? Or should I bring no white clothing?
Michael Thoryn Aug 28, 2014 at 05:47 PM

Don't think color matters. Pat and I have 4-5 changes of drip dry clothing from REI and LLBean.

Dear Bob: email: send away! Thanks, RBYoshioka

Bob Gitter Aug 28, 2014 at 03:41 PM

We were there in May of this year. It was not quite as hot as we thought it would be. On the hot days we wore cargo shorts, t-shirts and sandals. I would note that many of the toilets were the squat variety. Women might consider wearing skirts.

Although it was not on our itinerary and it does not appear to be on yours, I would recommend adding the summer palace in Beijing and for those that have an interest, the Jewish Museum in Shanghai.
Overall, a wonderful experience.

If people send me their email address at I will be glad to send them a Picasa album of our photos from the trip.

Thanks very much Bob--I'm no longer worried about being underdressed. The tips are good too, especially the Jewish Museum in Shanghai, whose existence I had not imagined!

Hi: I'm Peter Schaeffer, and my wife Stephanie and I are going on the Sept. 13th departure. I have a question about clothing for men. It looks to me like it'll likely be warm and sticky at least some of the time and wonder if anyone knows whether or not sandals, t-shirts cargo shorts, etc. are considered OK. Thanks.

Peter: Wrote a long comment, but it got lost. Briefly, we lik,me long pants and long sleeved performance fabric tees. Since I retired I hate shirts with collars. Maybe the other post will surface...The new performance "wicking" fabrics are great...dry quickly, launder well, dry overnight in the sink and look great. Best, RBYoshioka

Hello: My name is Robert Yoshioka, and along with my wife, Barbara are going with RS on their October 7-22, 2014, Classis Icons of China....We have made our own air reservations and arrive in Beijing on October 8 at 4:30 AM - would you believe! We want to take public transportation from the airport to one of the central drop off points and thence from there, via cab, to the hotel with the printed instructions sent to us by RS. We determined this week that our particular tour has 14 individuals signed up already! Love small group travel. Would like to chat with fellow travelers on this discussion board or privately. I can be reached at: We have almost 6 weeks before our trip commences, so let's see if we can't find out who we are and get some sense of our interests and reasons for traveling to China at this time. I have done a lot of research about the air quality and have already purchased masks -information about which I would be happy to share. In addition, a good friend of our is making a similar trip beginning later this week, and he will be sending along emails about 'dis and 'dat, which I will also be happy to share with all who might be interested. Let's use this social media site to get some social interaction started. Best, RBYoshioka
