I am curious about the luggage handling situation. I've been having some shoulder issues and storing things overhead presents a challenge for me right now. Will we have help loading luggage onto and off of our transport? Thanks!
Marjorie Wright Sep 01, 2015 at 02:53 PM

Yes, there is help with luggage. You would have to put your carry on stuff overhead in the bus. If not crowded, you could set carry on on an empty seat. Also you will find that your guide and co-travelers are always helpful!
Linda Musun Sep 01, 2015 at 03:48 PM

Thanks! This helps me decide which carryon piece to bring.

Greetings! I am booked for the Sept 11 trip. I am curious about laundry facilities at the hotels. No information re laundry on their websites. I like to pack light but I don't relish washing everything in the sink!
Laura Peyton Sep 01, 2015 at 11:05 AM

We did not use any in the hotels, but when we were in the precious town of Killybegs, we spent a morning at the laundry mat there. It was a chill day and she folded for us. Very easy. This is a wonderful wonderful trip. I hope you get Beibhan OConner for your guide. She is fantastic.
Linda Musun Sep 01, 2015 at 01:30 PM

Thanks! Any chance the laundromat is near a local pub?
Tracey Schoon Sep 03, 2015 at 03:37 AM

Our group leader is from Galway and, when we arrived in Galway yesterday's he had arranged for someone to pick up a bag of laundry from each of us in the morning and it was returned in just a few hours. The cost was only 10 euro Per bag. My roommate and I shared a bag. I was able to get all my u deft hinges done, plus 4 pairs of pants and 4 shirts. well worth it! Not sure if the other group leaders can arrange this service. P.S. Lots of Pubs!!

The bus stop from the Castle to the Airport is about 2 blocks from the Castle and not too well marked. I would suggest you ask the hotel desk when you check in if they have a recent bus schedule(might be on the internet). Probably I would take a taxi to insure a timely arrival at the airport to meet the group. It would not be a good time to "miss the bus"!

Tracey Schoon Aug 15, 2015 at 09:53 PM

I will be staying at the Bunratty Castle Hotel. Is there an early bus to get to the airport? Taxi?

Pat Buckley Aug 15, 2015 at 01:17 AM

Thanks for the info on staying by the airport and going to Bunratty Folk Pak. Am going on the Sept 18th trip, staying o/n prior and wonders if anyone would be interested in going to the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

The Park Inn is less than 1 1/2 blocks from the airport. You just walk thru the parking lot of the airport which is fairly small. It is well marked path. You can see the 2 story hotel when you walk out of the airport. The bus stop is along the curb right outside the airport. You can buy a ticket in the vending machine just inside the airport. Look at guidebook for that area to determine which direction to get onto the bus. It took me about 25 minutes via bus and driver was very helpful in telling me where to catch the return bus later that day. Folk park was not crowded and very pleasant. Had a good lunch there and returned to the hotel about 4pm. Good luck. By the way RS can make your hotel resersvation and there may be other RS travelers staying at the same hotel that night. I found out the next morning that there were 2 other members of this particular tour at the hotel the same night I was there.

Check with Road Scholar again. Generally they will include you if you are there by or before the time the bus leaves the airport. I have often made my own arrangements(probably 6-8 international trips) and have always been included in the transfer to first place. The trick is to be certain you are there on time. I went on this RS program last August and I flew one day early and stayed at the Park Inn adjacent to the Shannon Airport. After arriving at airport and taking my luggage to the hotel, I rode the public bus that stops at the airport to see Bunratty Castle and Folk park. Spent a great day there, had a leisurely dinner at the hotel, got a good night's sleep and felt great the next morning when I walked over to the airport and met the group coming in that morning.
Tracey Schoon Aug 11, 2015 at 11:03 PM

Excellent idea, Jean! That's just what I'm going to do! I have changed my ticket to one day earlier and am now looking at hotels. Was it easy to get a taxi to the hotel?
Marjorie Wright Aug 12, 2015 at 02:27 AM

Excellent solution! We walked the short distance to the hotel and had breakfast before meeting the group. Going a day ahead also really helps with jet lag.

Tracey Schoon Aug 11, 2015 at 01:41 PM

I am attending the Aug 27th program. I did not realize that the "private coach" was only for attendees that booked their travel through Road Scholar. Does anyone else need to book transport from Shannon Airport to Killarney? I would like to know what arrangements others have made before I book anything.
Marjorie Wright Aug 11, 2015 at 01:53 PM

Call Road Scholar with your flight info. We made our own reservations but had no problem joining the group transfer, both arriving and departing. Always call them with this kind of question: they are extremely helpful.
Tracey Schoon Aug 11, 2015 at 02:04 PM

I called RS, but the coach leaves an hour before my flight arrives. In the past, I have never had to arrange for my own transfer - I guess I just got lucky with my flights and they arrived in time for the RS coach. It never dawned on me that the transfer wasn't included. Lesson learned!
Marjorie Wright Aug 11, 2015 at 02:11 PM

Oh shucks! That is too bad as it's quite a distance. Guess I don't have another suggestion except to try to find a private company, car & driver, etc.
