ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I had Road Scholar make my flight arrangements and I arrive the morning of 9/10. Where do I meet up with my transportation to our hotel?
Jerry Hardy Aug 28, 2014 at 04:06 PM

Just got my answer in today's mail!

Hello Participants to this Canadian Maritimes Program!
My name is Anne Matheson, and I am your Group Leader for the Programs beginning August 20 and Sept 10, 2014.
I want to welcome you and just give a couple of quick suggestions: bring along a sweater or fleecy that can be worn underneath a light rain/wind proof jacket. Ensure that you have either a hat / cap, or a hood on your jacket because we can get some windy days up in the Cape Breton Highlands. You will not need hiking boots or anything similar, but good sturdy walking shoes are helpful. You will not want to wear any light sandals for the day that we are at Hopewell Rocks either.
We have had a wonderful summer with our earlier Programs so we'll hope that the late summer weather is kind to us too.
I look forward to meeting you in Halifax and showing my home area with you.

We are driving to the program. Is there more economical parking available than that at the Atlantica Hotel? - Corliss & Rick Davis, Belfast ME

Hello Corliss & Rick
Anne L Matheson Aug 18, 2014 at 08:38 AM

The Atlantica will not permit long term parking if you are not using their facilities. However, directly across the street, still on Robie Avenue, and about 1 block down, there is long term parking at the hospital. I would venture to say that all of my previous "drivers" have parked there and been very happy. I don't know the daily rate. Across the street from the hotel, on Quinpool Rd. there is a new parkade that opened this summer, but again, I do not know their rates. I'm sure the staff at the Atlantica Front Desk will help with more information if they have it, or call them before you get into Halifax.. They are super folks.

Hello again. I just received an email from you about the meals, but for some reason it is not showing here. I will discuss this with you personally on Wed. when we meet. There is an easy solution! :-)

Anyone signed up for the Sept 10th program?

Premium Email Subscriber Jul 25, 2014 at 06:53 PM

Hmm, thought my name rather than Premium E-mail Subscriber would appear on the previous post. My name is Pat Hunt.
Anne L Matheson Aug 18, 2014 at 08:42 AM

Hi Pat, I see your name on my participant list. If you have not yet found a travel partner for a taxi from the airport, there IS a shuttle bus. I had some participants use it on the last program, but they also had only carry on luggage. You might want to check it out at the airport, on the arrival level where the regular taxis are, to see what their prices and departure times are. I know you can also buy a round trip ticket, which is a bit cheaper. See you on Wednesday!

Hi,
I'll be taking part in the August 20 - 30th program and will arrive in Halifax at 4:00PM on the 19th. If anyone else will be arriving around that time, I would appreciate your contacting me so we could share the cost of the limo/taxi.

Anne L Matheson Jul 13, 2014 at 09:26 AM

Hi Varda
That seems a bit odd, but I am not an expert on "taxi' legislation either. Given that there are 4 of you, the cost is going to be around $20.00 each anyhow. It's at least 35 minutes from the airport to the hotel, and you might be caught in some rush hour traffic, so when you weigh out the costs in that regard, it's still a good price. What day are you arriving?
Warmly
Anne

Varda Solomon Jul 12, 2014 at 03:02 PM

Hi Anne,
I called Atlantica to reserve a pickup for 4, and Zico wanted us to reserve the larger SUV. He said that the Lincoln Town Car can hold 4 only if each person has only one piece of luggage, and the Canadian law is that all luggage must be in the truck and no luggage can be in the car, not even carry-on. In your experience, do the 4 of us really need a larger car? We each have one piece of luggage plus a carry-on or purse.

Thanks,
Varda

Here is the link to the Anne & Gilbert musical if anyone is interested. The Guild Theatre is about 2 blocks from our hotel.
