Heads up to anyone who hasn't obtained Turkish visa. The only way to pay for the visa through the Turkish evisa website is with a Mastercard or Visa that is okayed for international use AND is 3D Secured. We have cards with two national banks and neither of them offer 3D security. A Visa card would say "Verified by Visa" and Mastercard would say "MasterCard SecureCode." Apparently, US Bank and Bank of America offer these cards, but rather than apply for a new credit card, we used a visa/passport service called VisaHQ. They charged an additional $39 per visa, but in view of how much we're spending on this trip, that seemed like a drop in the bucket. RoadScholar said no one else had indicated having a problem because of the need for 3D Security (which adds an extra layer of security for online transactions, but is often detested by both customers and merchants. In this case, the "merchant" is the Turkish Embassy.).

I paid on my visa from Canada and with exchange rate toltal cost was $78.A little costlier than $20.
Dawn Craig Mar 23, 2015 at 07:11 PM

Sorry to hear that. We took the trip last September into October and did not have that problem. I hope you love the trip. We certainly did!

My husband and I will be on the April trip. Our second Road Scholar trip, but first cruise. We are flying out of Cincinnati to Paris, then to Athens. We would appreciate any tips about clothing that time of year, cruise ship, packing, cell phones, etc.

Patricia Buchanan Nov 28, 2014 at 01:07 PM

I'm leaving from JFK on Delta at 4:58pm. I like that it is nonstop to Athens. Anyone else on that flight?

Pauline S Nov 05, 2014 at 05:12 PM

Hello, I am leaving from Dulles airport for the April trip, anyone else?.

Jim Aug 19, 2014 at 07:33 PM

My wife and I are on this wonderful trip. This will be our first time in this part of the world, and first trip with Road Scholar. We wonder how much cash to bring? We only need cash for incidentals. And, what currency or currencies should we bring. Your thoughts will be appreciated. Thank you.
Donell Kelly Aug 19, 2014 at 08:45 PM

Hi Jim. Hope you and your wife have a great time. I'm not going to be on this trip, so can't really tell you about the currency. I had my bank set up a separate, temporary atm account with a separate card that I used for a trip to Europe last year. The account didn't charge intnl. fees for atm withdrawals. It worked very well. Good luck & happy voyaging!
Jim Aug 20, 2014 at 12:20 AM

Thank you so much for this clever idea. I am sure our bank would do the same.
Patricia Buchanan Aug 20, 2014 at 12:43 PM

On other trips I converted US $ to local currency and RS guides helped those needing ATM. Also some credit cards specifically don't charge a conversion fee. Be sure to notify credit card company where you will be or they might deny the charge thinking card was stolen! See you.

Pat- I'll look for the book you recommended.

Yes, Pat I got in just in time. Let's keep in touch.

I am thinking of the April trip, this would be my first cruise as a single. Any other single's ?
Pat Highet Jun 28, 2014 at 02:39 PM

I enrolled as a single (I'm a "senior" woman). After telling friends about this trip, good friend, Linda, also enrolled as a single.
Pauline S Jul 04, 2014 at 08:53 PM

Hi Pat, thanks for reply. I'm waiting to see if flights from Toronto are included. Good to know I wouldn't be the only single woman.

Thinking about the April trip. Does anyone one the cabin type & deck for the posted price?
Nancy Jones Jul 01, 2014 at 01:35 PM

I used this website in conjunction with voyagestoantiquity.com. RS will not give you the exact cabin, but you can see options.
