Kathleen, We are sitting in the Chicago airport, having just returned from the Danube trip. It was awesome!! We are avid bikers and had 1500 training miles before the trip so found it easy. Fellow riders who were counting on their tennis game and/or jogging prowess to get them through, were complaining quite a bit after the first 40 mile day... 20 of which were in the rain. Really stiff and sore, they said. We found it relaxing. After the first day the sun came out and we had unseasonably warm weather (highs in the upper 70's) for all but the last day... when the cold returned along with headwinds. So, be prepared for all kinds of weather so you'll be warm and cozy if it rains, and cool if it's warm. Safety was stressed over and over again, because some of the riding is on roadways and/or in cities/towns. Feeling comfortable on a bike is critical because of that. Take butt balm and perhaps a gel seat if you don't get enough miles beforehand... or even if you do!! I was glad to have both along just to be more comfortable along the way. It was a fantastic experience!

I am in good physical health but do not cycle routinely. How avid a cyclist does someone need to be to do this trip? I plan to go in May 2016 if offered then so there is time to prepare.

Hi, Kathleen. You don't have to be an avid cyclist for this trip but you should definitely plan to spend time biking to prepare.

My husband and I have just signed up for the Sept. 2014 trip... are there others out there? For those of you who went last year, what was the weather like? Head-winds? Tail-winds?

Congratulations on enrolling in an excellent program. I enjoyed the trip very much. The route was quite flat and most days very picturesque, with frequent stops at beautiful and interesting sites. The weather was cooler and more rainy than I envisioned when I signed up for it. Be prepared for cooler temperatures and rain and you should have no problems. One day we had cold fairly strong headwinds.

Hi nan,

I arrive in Munich on 9/17 around 12:30 PM. I'm staying at Eurostar Grand Central near the Hauptbanhof. NY times article on Munich mentions a local live music scene at Glockenbachwerkstatt( burgerhaus/community center) with a varied musical scene. May be worth checking out. I'd be willing to give it a try. My email address is rdstanchik@hotmail.com, I will have service on my smart phone during the trip so you can communicate by email while in Munich. Looking forward to the bicycling trip and meeting everyone.
