Road Scholar
Program #15878RJ
17 Days | 16 Nights
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Took the Balkan trip last Fall. It was wonderful - a lot to see, a lot to learn - Well planned and fun to do.

Carole Neumann Mar 24, 2015 at 05:56 PM

My husband and I took this tour last Fall. We had great travel mates and many wonderful experiences. I read "Bridge on the River Drina" before the tour, and recently bought, but have not yet read, "Balkan Ghosts." We would love to visit this area again.

Hi, We're looking forward to this trip, too, and will be coming from R.S.'s Best of Portugal program. A few years ago we participated in R.S.'s Bulgaria, Romania and Sibiu (extension) programs, so practically the whole story will now unfold. Anybody else plowing through Dennis Hupchick's "The Balkans - From Constantinople to Communism"?

Lim and Barney - are you on the May 11 tour? Do you recommend that book?

. . . I'm a big fan, yet the Mark Mazower book was more than adequate . I'll look for something that's more historical novel at this point. Yes, indeed we're looking forward to this Balkan Highlights program!
Nancy McKinley Mar 23, 2015 at 09:43 PM

I picked up Where the West Ends by Michael Totten which is anecdotal based on his driving around the Balkans and talking with locals in 2008, I think. Interesting to hear the man-on-the-street views of where the Balkans are now with respect to each other and to Americans and others in the West.

Is anyone else signed up for the May 11, 2015 trip to the Balkans?
James Burch Feb 21, 2015 at 04:52 PM

Yes, Nancy, I have signed up for it and I'm really excited about it. It is my first Road Scholar trip.
Nancy McKinley Feb 24, 2015 at 11:29 PM

Ah - good to meet you. You'll love Road Scholar. This is our 7th, I think. We're arriving in Dubrovnik a day early and interested in sharing a hotel shuttle from the airport to the hotel in Herceg Novi. Will you be arriving early or on the regular start day?
James Burch Feb 25, 2015 at 08:14 AM

I'm flying into Sofia two weeks early and exploring Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, and southern Montenegro before joining the group. I'm staying in the HN hotel the night before you arrive.

Dear travelers,

j8st posted and saw the new price, it seems uch higher than our prior trip. With the Euro down, one would expect and adjustement downward in price.

Nancy Mc Kinley,

We found the trip to be wonderful and no problems, staff and guides were excellent. review yiour history as the war in the 1990,s is still fresh in the minds of many. we stayed extra days in Dubrovnik and in Lubejiano. Should be a good value with the
euro less in value.

Thanks Duane - we signed up for the May 11, 2015 trip.

Nancy McKinley Jan 17, 2015 at 04:04 PM

We're interested in this trip but see some reference to bad reviews in the discussion stream here. Does anyone have any update on those reviews or know where we could read them?
Carole Neumann Jan 19, 2015 at 10:58 PM

We had a wonderful time on this tour in September 2014. No water problems which had been due to flooding. But some roads had been damaged.

Carole Neumann Jul 25, 2014 at 06:44 PM

We will be in Italy for 2 weeks before joining this Balkan tour in September. Has anyone ever made the ferry trip from Italy to Dubrovnik? Have you any suggestions? Thank you, C. Neumann
