Jennifer, Diana & others--the classroom is pretty basic--you have a blackboard & chalk. One good idea is to bring postcards, tourist sight brochures, & maps from your home state. I was trying to encourage someone to bring a laminated simple map of the U.S. and some stick on dots or map pins so that each group of volunteers could mark where they are from in the U.S. and the kids can learn about our country as they learn English. I don't know if someone from another group has done this. We of the 1st group were from Conn., D.C., Philadelphia & Jacksonville FL.

I am thinking of joining this trip in Oct or Nov. Have absolutely no experience in teaching and public speaking is not my forte; in fact is terrifying. Would the tutoring on this tour be one-on-one or would I be expected to stand in front of a class? I would be grateful for someone who has done this type of trip before to email me. Thanks in anticipation. jenni. jennir55@bigpond.net.au

Jennifer--you would be in front of a small group (the teacher divides up the class and assigns some to each volunteer--usually your "class" is about 10--12 students)--the kids are great--respectful, eager to learn, and they love hearing stories, learning songs, playing games, hearing about america, etc. --don't worry about stage fright--it's mcu less formal than lecturing to a big class--those of us who've already done it can give you lots of ideas and hints--a lot of your time is also spent in sightseeing (& shopping if you want--there are many beautiful inexpensive crafts to buy)--regards--Sandie

Hi Sandra - I'd love to hear your ideas and hints -- I'm going to India in October -- thanks!
Diana Sage Apr 14, 2013 at 04:02 PM

Hi Sandra -- what kinds of games did you play? Also, what songs did you sing with the class? Diana
Sandra Brito Apr 24, 2013 at 06:08 PM

Diana--Anuragk had already taught the class the "Doe, a deer..." song from the sound of music. I taught them "Sally the Camel" and Jan taught "Row Row Row Your Boat". I taught them the Facts in Five game (great for vocabulary review) and we also used it to make sentences. For example: if the categories were girls names, transportation, places, colors, and foods; and the letters included M, they could make a sentence like "Monica went by motorcycle to Mumbai to eat a maroon meatball."

Thanks for all the neat ideas!

I'm going to India Oct. 1-19 and leaving from Richmond, VA. If there are any other Richmonders, please get in touch -- would love to meet with you! Diana

I would like to chat with others going in Oct 13. Thanks! Sarah

I assume we are going the same time - just confirmed that my flight leaves JFK on 10/15. This will be first trip to India although I'm a seasoned Elderhosteler. I'm from Kalamazoo, MI and have yet to make arrangements to be in NYC in order to get the flights.

It isn't clear what the criteria is to be an English tutor. Is this only for teachers?
Diana Sage Mar 16, 2013 at 06:05 PM

I was told as long as you can speak English, that's all that is required.
