Hello all, a friend and I are signed up for this program March 3. We're two ladies from LA and it's our first Road Scholar trip. We're really looking forward to it! Anyone else out there signed up for the March 3rd departure?

Lisa Croucher Aug 07, 2014 at 04:05 PM

hello everyone, my parents and sister and i are doing the january 6 trip as a family. i've been to cuba a few times but not since 2005. my sister is a political scientist who has done research in mexico and miami. my dad loves old cars. and my mom loves art and gardens. we all are looking forward to the trip and to meeting the other participants.

My husband, sister and a friend are going on this trip in February. What can anyone tell me about Wi-Fi access in the hotels or elsewhere?
Susan Kaufman Aug 07, 2014 at 03:57 PM

Very slow to none:( Best to anticipate being off the grid completely. (and hi again, Marjorie!)
Freida McDuffie Aug 07, 2014 at 09:34 PM

agree with Susan....even when available Wi-Fi very expensive

Sue Hobbs Aug 05, 2014 at 10:08 PM

Do you need any vaccinations for Cuba?
Douglas Cummings Aug 05, 2014 at 10:16 PM

No. No vaccinations required.

I also found that the Nov. 4-12 trip is full (24). Are none of those 24 wanting to post a few thoughts here? Anyone else going to Miami via Raleigh/Durham?

Kira Dirlik Aug 04, 2014 at 06:31 PM

I called RS and found the $2995 cost was a "misprint". I paid the $250 reg fee which goes toward the true $3395. charge, meaning I now owe by Aug. 19th $3145. I hope this may be helpful for others.

Kira Dirlik Jul 13, 2014 at 10:34 AM

I am curious about the cost listed. To the right, here on this board, it says Nov. 4-12 (my trip) that cost starts at $3395. But in a recent RS catalog, June 2014 issue, it says the trip is $2995. (I would hope for an assigned roommate, another single woman traveling as a individual.) I know neither of these prices include getting to Miami from home.
Susan Kaufman Jul 13, 2014 at 10:50 AM

Call Road Scholar - you'll get a straight answer. Also, re money: no American credit cards, no dollars. Easy exchange at hotels for CUC's. $200-500 plenty.

I love to read novels written by authors of a country I am visiting, or about the country by any author. I enjoyed "Dreaming in Cuban" which is on the recommended reading list RS sent to us. But I'm also enjoying Christopher Hunt's "Waiting for Fidel", Carlos Eire's "Waiting for Snow in Havana" and Rachel Kushner's "Telex From Cuba". I am picking the latter for my local bookclub.
Anne Fernald Jul 11, 2014 at 03:41 PM

Kira -- I do the same thing. We went to Cuba in Feb. My favorite books (mysteries) were by Leonardo Padura -- Havana Gold, Havana Blue etc. They cover the gritty side of Havana, but also have info about how real people manage to live in Cuba. The characters rely on the black market for food. One character was paralyzed in the Angolan war. The books were a great read..

Kira, if you'd like some non-fiction as well, I'd recomment "Three Nights in Havana". It's the story of the personal friendship between Fidel castr and
David Fritz Jul 11, 2014 at 03:56 PM

Sorry, hit the wrong key ... Fidel Castro and Canada's former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. In order to set the context, though it covers a ton of background material on Cuba's relations with Canada, the US and Russia. Another good one is "Havana Nocture", the history of the Mob in Cuba from 1945 to 1959.
Kira Dirlik Jul 13, 2014 at 10:25 AM

I will check those out. The ones I suggested also have a lot of history interwoven into the stories. Thanks.
