When I came back from this AWESOME whale experiencing I said that I'd go back in a heartbeat. One of my friends took me up on that...We are scheduled to go Mid March 2015. Just as excited as last time!!!

I am on the trip starting on March 23. Any advice from past participants about clothing? How warm was it in the desert? What sort of temperatures on the water? Did you really get to pat a whale?

Hi Mary:

I took this trip last January, and LOVED it. Layer your clothing...it was warm in the desert, especially climbing up to see the painted caves. Lightweight jacket with sweater beneath took care of ebeing on the water. There were 12 in our boat, and 6 got to tough a whale...I was inches from one, but she ducked. For the best picture taking....arrange with someone from the other boat to aim at your boat, and you do the same. That way you'll get a picture of you reaching out to the whale. That was by far the best picture I have of that trip. Bring lots of reading material for the long bus ride, but do enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Hi Mary, as below in the comment chain, I did this trip last Feb. and loved it. Yes, you really get to touch a whale. I was a bit nervous at first but the baby whales come right up to the boats-you will not believe it. Excellent advice from Sheila about the photographing. And it was freezing on the water. I wore almost all my clothes. Take gloves and a scarf. Have fun and please post when you get back home! Cheers, Linda

How much should we have in Pesos for this trip? Also what are the car parking at the hotel in San Diego requirements? Also can we get a group rate to stay in that hotel the evening before? Beth and Jim
Linda Brindley Feb 02, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Hi Beth and Jim, I did this trip in Feb. 2013 and loved it! I flew in a day early and the hotel gave me the group rate. I know a couple of the trip members drove to San Diego, so hopefully one of them will let you know about the parking. I didn't take pesos, just used U.S. dollars. I hope you get to touch the whales!!

Thanks, Linda. I appreciate your responding with the info we need. We are hoping to touch those whales! I understand there are more there this year than in the last few years. Very excited! Beth

Is anyone doing the 4 Great Migrations trip after the Jan 29 trip? I'd like to carpool from San Diego to Cambria.

The weeks of counting down are now in the DAYS - my excitement level is getting high.
Are there any bridge players joining us on the Feb 8-15th trip? If so, I'll pack some playing cards. Bringing binoculars, as well. Oooh. Can't wait to meet you all. PegLeg

Hi to all who are going on the Gray Whale Watching trip. I am reading "Miraculous Air" by O.M. Mayo - a wondrous account of much of what we are going to see and experience on our trip. It is making me count the days even more. Can't wait to meet all on the February 8-15th trip. PegLeg

Hi all,
I just signed up for the March 10 tip and am super excited. Booking the flight from Houston, the best I could get was a flight that will get me to the hotel on 3/10 an hour after the official start (by 11:00 AM). Does anyone know when the group actually leaves the hotel for Scripps that morning? Should I arrive the night before?
Thanks,
Ilana Reisz

You must have decided by now. I'm going on the March 10 trip, too. I'm staying in the hotel on Saturday night.

Thanks Judy. I did decide and will be joining you after your brunch on Sunday. I am looking forward to the trip and meeting you. Ilana
