For free time when in Barcelona, take a train day-trip to Girona. It's a wonderful little town with a spectacular modern museum covering the history of the Jewish community there (prior to the Inquisition). It doesn't matter whether you are Jewish or not! We missed visiting Figueres, and regreted it (great Dali architechture). Also, eat a Taller de Tapas, preferably the one near the Cathedral, though there are others. Also, shop at a little Danish chain store, "Tiger", pronounced "Tee-Jay". Enjoy! Barcelona is the very best!!

Hello--I'm taking the May 3-11, 2015 Best of Portugal trip, following my RS trip with Independent Barcelona April 24-May 2. Anyone else doing that?
Toni Kestenbaum Feb 12, 2015 at 04:37 PM

We combined the two trips in the Fall of 2014, but we did. Portugal first and spent 5 days on our own in Barcelona.the
Toni Kestenbaum Feb 12, 2015 at 04:44 PM

This email posted too quickly! I was going to say that the Portugal was really well-signed and that our leader, Helen, was FANTABULOUS!!
Toni Kestenbaum Feb 12, 2015 at 04:50 PM

And, Barcelona is amazing. Beautiful, clean, full of happy, welcoming people and GREAT ART. We loved having the extra 5 days.Have a great time!
Rebecca Dixon Feb 12, 2015 at 06:34 PM

Thanks, Toni. That's encouraging, esp. since these are my first experiences with RS.
Laura Peyton Feb 16, 2015 at 09:28 AM

Rebecca, My husband Sandy and I are going on this same trip. We are doing Barcelona independently and then hooking up with the Roads Scholar Portugal trip. We did one other RS in Ireland last year and LOVED it, so looking forward to this one, too. We are in Atlanta.
Rebecca Dixon Feb 16, 2015 at 03:10 PM

Hello, Laura. So glad to meet a fellow traveler. RS doesn't meet us "independent" types at the Barcelona airport. My schedule is O'Hare to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Barcelona. Per chance are you on Lufthanza 1126 to B'lona? RS also booked me from B'lona to Lisbon on Tap Portugal 1051 May 3 at 10:25am. Might you all be on THAT flight?.

Romaine T Sep 25, 2014 at 04:40 PM

Hello,
I am going on this trip October 25-November 3rd. Would love to hear from others and their travel plans to Lisbon.
Liz Konold Sep 25, 2014 at 05:15 PM

Hi - I went last year and tacked on an extra 2 days in Lisbon at the beginning of the trip. There are 2 'bus tours' (red & blue) available that were excellent. Extra time allowed me to tour three museums not on the RS tour, see more of the city, wander streets & eat in family-run cafes. I highly recommend an extra day or two if you can do it.
Romaine T Sep 26, 2014 at 02:17 PM

Hi Liz, Thanks for these tips. I have already booked up flight and didn't build in extras. Because this trip has flex time. Would there be time to do one of the bus tours you mentioned for a half day? Also, what would you recommend for transportation from Lisbon airport to hotel?
Liz Konold Sep 26, 2014 at 05:06 PM

The RS tour does a bus trip similar to the "red bus" tour. I don't think you could fit in the other one, though. The 'blue bus' went out to the 1998 World Expo area, which I found interesting & I stopped and spent time at the Tile museum. Loved the Gulbenkian Museum. I think you have to tour the castle on your own. Loved (!) Coimbra, the university town---wished that there had been more time there. This tour is a good "overview" which is all one can expect from in just 1 week

Susan Southam Sep 07, 2014 at 03:26 PM

I'm going on the October 11-20 trip. Would love to meet others who are also going.
Carlos Goldberg Sep 07, 2014 at 09:33 PM

Hi Susan, so am I. Do you live in Indianapolis; if yes we can travel together, or meet at J FK. Carlos Goldberg, Ph.D.
Susan Southam Sep 07, 2014 at 10:00 PM

I'm flying from Salt Lake City to Paris, and then from Paris to Lisbon. Looking forward to meeting you in Lisbon, Carlos!
Carlos Goldberg Sep 09, 2014 at 01:09 AM

Sounds like a great trip. Are you staying in Paris for awhile. See you in Lisbon. Carlos

We love Seattle! Are you far north? Do you know my friend, David Brewster, who used to be the publisher of the Seattle Weekly, among many other things, and is still very engaged with all things Seattle?

Toni Kestenbaum Aug 17, 2014 at 11:49 PM

My husband, Herb and I are going on this trip on September 20. We live in Philadelphia and are flying direct from here to Lisbon (US Airways). Our flight arrives 8:50AM on the 21st. Toni Kestenbaum I can be reached at tonisoprano@verizon.net. (Isn't that a clever email address?!
