Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I just booked the 1/13/14 Program. Anyone else booked on that one yet? This is my first trip with Road Scholar and first trip to Hawaii. I retire from the Ohio Department of Transportation (soon-to-be-former-engineer)in Dec. 2013. This is my gift to myself. I also have booked the entire month of February 2014 in a condo in Maui. Can't Wait!!!

I'm leaving in less than two weeks, but haven't yet received the mailed package. Am I being too impatient?

I'm also taking this trip in March; my first Road Scholar tour and first trip to Hawaii. I'm a retired school teacher from Nappanee, Indiana, a small town in North Central Indiana in the heart of Amish country. In close proximity to South Bend & Notre Dame. Look forward to meeting others on our tour. I will arrive in Hilo the day before and may try to see the Liliuokalani Park Gardens on Mar. 4 , before we register. Do others have similar plans?

I'm taking this trip in March, coming from Toronto, and would like to know who else is coming, and from where.

I have a large suitcase on wheels that I can't carry myself. Will I have to get it up and down stairs? Should I bring 2 smaller ones instead?
Jeanne Trachta Feb 08, 2013 at 02:13 PM

I think I read somewhere that we will be managing our own luggage, so it would probably be best to be as self-contained as possible.

Our flight arrives in Kona on Feb. 10...any suggestions on getting from Kona to Hilo? We have a car reserved, as it looks like we'll need it, but would prefer some public transport and avoid having to rent a car. Thanks.

Public bus runs from Kona Commons Shopping Center to Mooheau bus station in Hilo early in morning and again in late afternoon according to schedule I found at http://www.heleonbus.org/schedules-and-maps/kona-hilo-bus-schedule.

My wife and I are going on Jan 14.

Some reviews mentioned snorkeling. Anyone know if sorkling equipment is available at the 2 beaches mentioned in the itinerary? We would bring masks, but would need fins.

Thanks

See you there, Wendy

Took this trip in October 2012. The only opportunity we had for beach swimming, for about an hour, was at Hanalei Beach Pavilion Park on Kauai. I do not remember seeing anywhere to rent fins at this park. Perhaps you can rent them at the Aloha Beach Resort, where you will be staying the night before. You are going to have a wonderful time!
Dave Olim Jan 06, 2013 at 03:44 PM

Kathy - I emailed Aloha Beach Resort, and they said that they do not rent gear, but there is a "vendor on property" that does.
Dave Olim Jan 06, 2013 at 03:46 PM

Mahalo nui for the info.

Going in January from Illinois and looking for others who are going.
