ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Signed up for the June 1-16, 2015 program. Looking for anyone else who is going.

Patricia Hunter Mar 05, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Arriving at the Hilo airport @6:22 for the Mar. 10 program. Anyone else? We can share a cab to the hotel.

Marvin Sitrin Dec 23, 2013 at 07:51 PM

Looking forward to the 1/13/14 trip. Anyone else coming from NJ?
William Hammett Mar 23, 2014 at 09:10 PM

Terri, you asked for advice. My wife says, hang loose and enjoy the ride. But of course I need not tell you. You sound up for it. Stanley and William, you up for it?

Terri Rappaport Nov 13, 2013 at 12:21 PM

My husband and I have booked for the March 31, 2014 trip. We are departing from JFK in New York. I am interested in hearing from anyone on the Discussion Board who is going on that trip. Also, we'd love to hear any special advice from past participants. Yes, it's a few months away - but so excited! This will be our 4th RS trip.
William Hammett Mar 22, 2014 at 03:54 PM

Bill and Marianne Hammett will be joining you from Chicago. We will arrive a day early . Looking forward to the fun.
Stanley Lieberman Mar 23, 2014 at 12:26 PM

Stanley Lieberman Mar 23, 2014 at 12:28 PM

I'm on the 3/31 trip. From suburban Philly. Go Phillies! Probably not this year. I am also arriving a day early. Booked
Stanley Lieberman Mar 23, 2014 at 12:31 PM

sorry, hit the wrong key. Booked a non-stop from Newark. I believe United has the only non-stop from the East Coast. I've been on both RS trips to Iceland, one summer and one New Years Eve. Both are fabulous. See you in a week.
William Miller Mar 23, 2014 at 05:13 PM

We're coming from Atlanta for the 3/31 program. We'll be there on the 29th. Looking forward to our first RS trip. Bill and Margaret

William Hammett Mar 24, 2014 at 10:20 AM

Question, how many Bills will be in our group? Better still, how big is our group?
William Miller Mar 24, 2014 at 08:19 PM

The group picture on the front of our information packet shows about 35 people, for whatever that's worth. Bill's seem to be everywhere, right? Bill Miller
Greg Smith Mar 28, 2014 at 01:53 PM

Greg and Sandy will arrive early Saturday late 2 days on our own prior to program
William Miller Mar 28, 2014 at 02:56 PM

We should get to Hilo at 5:52 pm Sat. the 29th. Bill & Margaret

In light of the possibility of a government shutdown looming in our future, any ideas on how Road Scholar would deal with National parks being closed. We are scheduled to visit 5 or 6 on this trip. ?? Has anyone ever experienced such a situation on another R.S. trip?
Charlie Ho Oct 02, 2013 at 01:43 PM

10-2-2013 Given that the shut down has occurred, it would be helpful to hear from the program directors about exactly how this might affect the trip. Pat Ho
William Miller Oct 07, 2013 at 01:27 PM

Margaret has called them three times, last today, and they are waiting to see what happens. They have a meeting scheduled this afternoon to discuss the situation Some trips involving Nat Parks would be done, just staying outside the Parks with alternate activities. This would not be acceptable for us. They said we could reschedule, had openings for the March 2014 trip. Don't know if we could gp then or not. Bummer!
Deb Evers Oct 07, 2013 at 07:34 PM

Good to hear this! We've been out of state during the last week and wondered if there was anything new! Will contact them tomorrow morning!
Jay Evers Oct 08, 2013 at 10:54 AM

After checking with them this morning, we discovered that we would have to forfiet our entire paid trip and reschedule a brand new trip in March. That would "create" a trip that would cost more than twice the original amount. Also we would have an additional change fee of $400 for flights. Definitely not an option for us. Contact your Senators and Representatives to encourage them to "play together" nicely as soon as possible!
William Miller Oct 08, 2013 at 08:22 PM

Looping discussion with them this afternoon, alternate itinerary to include such things as an orchid nursery, a zoo, but NO Nat Parks being worked up in the increasingly apparent event shutdown continues. Should be an e-mail out to us in a couple of days with particulars. Doesn't sound real promising. Trip next year would be 1K more for us.
William Miller Oct 08, 2013 at 08:28 PM

(Meant to say "looong" discussion)
Charlie Ho Oct 09, 2013 at 03:01 PM

We received a call yesterday from the Pacific Island Institute that the are not cancelling the trip but offering alternatives(unspecified) to the national parks. Our under standing from speaking to Road Scholar headquarters in Boston that we would have our money returned only if they decided to cancel the trip. Pat and Charlie Ho
William Miller Oct 09, 2013 at 05:59 PM

Thanks for relaying your experience. We got the same call from Pacific Island about the alternate trip, orchid nursery, zoo. etc. Road Scholar, Boston, said an e-mail was coming out, and when we got it to let them know if we were not interested in the new trip. She said we could get our money back. I told her we would not likely be interested in paying that kind of money for such things as orchid nurseries ans zoos. Still waiting for the e-mail.
Deb Evers Oct 10, 2013 at 01:59 AM

We were also told by Boston offices that a refund would not be possible unless the trip got cancelled. Interesting that there seem to be two "Corporate Responses." It would be nice to know which is the correct response! Haven't received the e-mail yet, either.
William Miller Oct 10, 2013 at 01:03 PM

You should have the e-mail, and as they told me the other day we can get our money back if the shutdown continues .
Deb Evers Oct 10, 2013 at 01:57 PM

Got it this morning. Now waiting till tomorrow morning for our call.
Charlie Ho Oct 10, 2013 at 03:13 PM

We got the email and googled the alternatives listed. Most look quite interesting. Friends just returned from Hawaii and gave very positive reviews to the Lava Tree and water falls Pat and Charlie Ho
Neil Robbins Oct 11, 2013 at 07:18 AM

Does anyone know the roster size requirements (max attending, minimum needed to have the trip) for this trip? We were supposed to attend in the Fall of 2012, but the trip was cancelled because too few people signed up. I'm concerned that if enough people request refunds, we'll be in a similar situation this time.
Charlie Ho Oct 11, 2013 at 09:41 AM

We were told by the person calling from Hawaii that 23 people had signed up. The capacity for the trip is 35. In a conversation with Boston yesterday we were told that "most" people were planning on going. Pat and Charlie Ho
Jay Evers Oct 11, 2013 at 10:39 AM

We're still on for Monday.
Neil Robbins Oct 11, 2013 at 12:21 PM

Neil Robbins Oct 11, 2013 at 12:22 PM

My wife called this morning. She was told that the trip is on, and that the # people who call for refunds today won't affect that.

William Miller Sep 06, 2013 at 12:56 PM

Margaret and I are doing the 10/14 trip and are really looking forward ti it as this will be our first time in Hawaii and first with Road Scholar. Any thoughts on what to bring? We're going to pack as light as possible, yet have what we need. Thinking our light weight, quick drying, hiking/camping stuff. See you there!
Jay Evers Sep 13, 2013 at 11:09 PM

Fun! Wish I had some quick dry things. May have to invest in some. We' re in the Colorado flood area and will be looking forward to getting away! Our first time in HI, too. Won't be long!
William Miller Sep 20, 2013 at 10:27 AM

Sure sorry about all the flooding there. Looks terrible on the news. Hope you were not impacted too badly. We're coming from Atlanta, GA so will be there a day early.
Deb Evers Sep 24, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Fortunately, not directly impacted here at our place. We are located just outside of the floodplain.

Thomas Lindemann Sep 01, 2013 at 10:00 PM

Hi to Deb Evers and others participating 10/14-10/30,
My husband and I are arriving in Hilo 4 days before the tour begins. We are renting an apartment and a car so we can recover from our long flight and do some exploring on our own. We are looking forward to meeting everyone and experiencing Hawaii.
Jay Evers Sep 13, 2013 at 11:12 PM

Should be a great trip! Deb & Jay won' t be there early, but will meet you there!

Deb Evers Jul 14, 2013 at 04:08 PM

Anyone going this October (10-14 thru 10-30-2013)? Also, for those of you who have attended this program, approx. how large are the groups?
