Discussion board will close soon.
Just heard that Thailand has just instituted a 2 month STATE OF EMERGENCY. Am wondering whether this might affect our travel plans...

Jim Kidney Jan 16, 2014 at 10:55 PM

Hi Leslye,
Won't be at airport in time for breakfast. Am staying in Santa Monica. Plan to drop off rental car around 10:30am.

Jim Kidney Jan 14, 2014 at 07:33 PM

Hi Karen,
It’s a bit complicated! Semester 2 actually covers 3 VOD cruise itineraries, starting on 2/4, 2/18, and 3/4. VOD has an excursion booklet and booking form for each of them, and I obtained all of them. There is also free time on Feb.12 and 19, which are on the first cruise called “Japan and Islands of the East China Sea”. I did not find any excursions there that interested me.
Phuket is visited during the last cruise called “Colours of the Indian Ocean”.
I can email you the booklet and form (Adobe pdf); or you can call VOD in FL.
Booking forms with prices shown are not online, but you can view/download excursion booklets found on VOD’s UK website, which is as follows: http://www.voyagesofdiscovery.co.uk/brochure.php

Thanks Jim, I wish I had thought to do this. I'll look at their web site.

Jim Kidney Jan 14, 2014 at 05:05 PM

There is a free day at Phuket Island on Mar 11. Through the Voyages of Discovery office in FL, I am booking a ship tour.
It’s an extended morning excursion which includes Phuket highlights, Wat Chalong temple, an elephant show, and a jungle trek in the Chalong Hills on an elephant(for 50 minutes) for $105.
Advantages of signing up now are: prepayment in $ at better exchange rate; and no disappointment if tour becomes fully booked.
Karen Modell Jan 14, 2014 at 06:32 PM

Where/how did you find this?
Leslye Lounsberry Jan 16, 2014 at 07:11 PM

See below. I am at the Four Points by Sheraton right at LAX.

Karen Modell Jan 11, 2014 at 05:46 PM

I also will fly into LAX on Feb 1 for our flight on Feb 2. Any ideas about where to spend the night?
Jim Kidney Jan 11, 2014 at 09:07 PM

Hi Karen, Arriving a day early, there is little time to visit LA. I’d stay near the LAX airport. Most airport hotels have free shuttles. Will try to spot you in the lounge.
Gordon and Connie Preecs Jan 12, 2014 at 01:44 AM

Just to be sure I've got this: We are on cathay Pacific, not Singapore Air. Our flight leaves at 1205AM on SuperBowl Sunday, 2 February. We are coming down the evening of Friday the 31st just to get a bit of cushion for weather, mechanicals, etc. We'll stay at an Embassey suites just outside the LAX gates, a walkable distance. Will be at the airport before 10PM on the 1st. Jim is taking 3days of cushion? Know something about LAX we should know??
Jim Kidney Jan 12, 2014 at 07:59 AM

Good point! Our group is split. Perhaps Karen can clarify which flight she is on. Having lived in LA 30 years ago, what I know is a bit dated.
Karen Modell Jan 12, 2014 at 08:16 AM

I'm on SQ11 (seat 42D) that's the one that leaves at 2:15p.m. on Feb 2. I get to LAX Feb 1 around 4:00 p.m. I'll look at tripadvisor and find a hotel. I just thought it might be nice to have dinner with fellow travelers. And if there was a single lady interested in sharing a room that would be good too.
Jim Kidney Jan 12, 2014 at 08:17 AM

SQ11 departs LAX at 2:05pm and arrives at Narita at 7:05pm, non-stop.
Karen Modell Jan 12, 2014 at 08:21 AM

ok, I'm sure I'll be there by 11:00am
Jim Kidney Jan 12, 2014 at 08:22 AM

Sorry! SQ11 departure is 2:15pm.
Leslye Lounsberry Jan 16, 2014 at 07:09 PM

Hi Karen and Jim. I all be right in front of you Karen in 41 D. I am arriving on the 30th and will be at the Four Points by Sheraton. It is right at the entrance to the airport and has shuttle service every 15-20 minutes to the airport. I have stayed there before and it is just fine. The are places to eat in the hotel. I can't remember about places nearby to eat but there are a lot that are a short cab ride away that the hotel can suggest. Would anyone be interested in meeting for breakfast on Sunday before we leave?
Karen Modell Jan 16, 2014 at 08:38 PM

Sounds like a plan. I'll let you know for sure next week. I want to into Jim's elephant ride too.

Jim Kidney Jan 10, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Hi Leslye,
Am flying to LA on Jan. 29 as a precaution. Don’t have tickets either, but was able to reserve a seat on SQ11 (38H, aisle). Nice to find out that another Road Scholar will be onboard. Perhaps we will spot one another in the lounge area.
The baggage allowances are way more generous than I need. However, Voyager stateroom’s storage space is less generous, and I will use most of it.

Leslye Lounsberry Jan 10, 2014 at 11:29 AM

I appears all travel is on Singapore Airlines with the exception of the side trip into Cambodia. Singapore is Star Alliance with United so any Mileage+ benefits you have with them will carry over. I confirmed directly with Singapore that this is true. Not that I would think of it but I can take 3 70 lb. bags plus a carry on. I think I could move to Asia with that!

Leslye Lounsberry Jan 10, 2014 at 11:24 AM

Hi Jim,
I am arriving in LA the night of 1/30 just in case there are any weather related issues. I have not received my tickets but I am on SQ11.
