ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Fred and I are planning to walk the Sydney Bridge, preferably at night. Anyone else on the October/November trip planning to do it?
Rob Stohlman Sep 19, 2014 at 06:56 PM

This is one of two things I have on my list for Sydney. The other is a ghost tour around the rocks and to the island holding convicts. My wife took the tour when she was in Sydney and recommends it.
David Berkenbilt Sep 20, 2014 at 12:47 AM

Sounds good. Let's talk when we meet in October!

Money belts are essential if you carry a lot of cash. We prefer using an ATM card when we travel. We have set up a separate "travel account" that is accessed by this card and is not connected to any other account that we have.

Edgar Bixby Sep 17, 2014 at 05:10 PM

What is the best way to carry money into NZ and Australia?

Andrea Stone Sep 13, 2014 at 02:25 AM

Janet- I'm reading A Town Like Alice and it's a good read so far. Only $2.99 on Kindle. Thanks for the tip. I'll look for the PBS show through Amazon, too.
JANET S REED Sep 15, 2014 at 01:09 PM

I couldn't find any video anywhere for A Town Like Alice ...

KATHLEEN SANTO Sep 10, 2014 at 10:43 PM

Janet, I will be part of March group as well. Thanks for book suggestion. Anyone else part of March group?
David Berkenbilt Sep 11, 2014 at 01:29 AM

We're leaving for the Odessy down under on Oct 11, a day early to be in time for a recouperation day and the first session. We are working out what to pack... not too much not too little. What fun! Anyone out there going on the Oct 12-Nov 8 trip?
Deborah Channell Sep 13, 2014 at 07:37 PM

We (my husband and myself) will be on the Oct 12-Nov 8 trip. I looked up our hotels and many of them have self service laundries. I'm thinking of packing only about a weeks worth of clothes and using washing machines as needed. Any comments from anyone else?
David Berkenbilt Sep 13, 2014 at 08:30 PM

Thanks for researching laundries! I invested in quick dry underwear (ex officio.) Also our optometrist recommended good wraparound sunglasses. Alice Springs temperatures get to over 100 degrees. Here is a link to Travelsmith's packing list which might be helpful.. http://www.travelsmith.com/travelcenter/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/PackingChecklist_2011.pdf

JANET S REED Sep 10, 2014 at 05:22 PM

I don't know how many people remember the PBS show "A Town Like Alice" that was on the early 80's. I decided to read the book which was written by Neville Shute in 1950. It is a great read you might enjoy before your trip.
David Berkenbilt Sep 10, 2014 at 07:38 PM

Thanks for the tip. I'd recommend "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson for a very entertaining and informative look at Australia. Also a :PBS series Wild Australasia may still be available to watch somewhere. It is a fascinating look at wildlife in Australia and New Zealand.

David Berkenbilt Aug 27, 2014 at 02:46 PM

Judy Halpern- David Berkenbilt and I will be on the Oct 15th trip to both New Zealand and Australia. We are in the process of figuring out what to pack and and how to fit it all in. The suggestion about bug nets was helpful. Thanks!

For those on the Sept 21 trip: I suppose you received an e-mail from our program leader, Ngaire today. I wrote back.asking how many on our tour. There will be 28 on the NZ portion, 18 continue to Aus, 14 join the group for Aus only. For those who were curious. She says those are nice sized groups. Based on other tours I've been on, I agree.
JANET S REED Aug 27, 2014 at 11:51 AM

Since I am not going until March, I don't have as much information as you. Do you have the same program leader for the entire trip?
Janice Hoistad Aug 27, 2014 at 12:08 PM

Hi Janet, Our final info packet came in this week and shows the program staff and their backgrounds. My understanding is that the Group Leader stays with the group throughout NZ and Aus, assisted by local Site Coordinators/Instructors. My info shows Site Coordinators for North Island, Southern NZ, Sydney, Melbourne, Northern Territory, and Cairns. All have impressive backgrounds!
