To all of you who have taken the Vietnam barge trip ... Do you have any more recommendations or tips? All that has been suggested has been useful so I am open to more thoughts. I understand the boat does not accept credit cards ... any suggestions as to how much cash (Dong) to bring? Any other thoughts?
PS ... we are leaving Sept 19 ... how stable is the weather in Vietnam at that time? Any thoughts or questions we should think about for when we meet the college students in HCMC?
Judith Hrycak Mar 09, 2014 at 11:34 AM

We traveled on the 9/4-18 tour last year and the weather was fine. short rainfalls a couples days but we were provided with umbrellas and it really only listed a short time. They will also take

Hey Rick . . . Yes, there is wifi on the boat. Doesn't always work and is slow, but mostly it's good. Ask the guy to turn it on. I did not need a SIM card for my ipad. TIP: wonderful massages from Channa for $17/hr -Rick#2

Rick Davis Mar 08, 2014 at 09:57 AM

To those of you who have taken this trip ... I believe wifi is available in all the hotels but is it also available on the boat?
Just curious to know for checking emails, etc.
Judith Hrycak Mar 08, 2014 at 11:04 AM

Rick, my husband said pretty good 3G service on river but you have to by a local SIM card , which the bartender will set you up.

I am going on Sept 11 trip and will probably do the extension.Everyone I know has loved Hanoi I am a single(they only allow one single person on each trip on the boats!) We start in Siem Reap and I may try to arrive a day early to accommodate to time change. I will be coming from Maputo, Mozambique where I live. So if anyone else arriving earl;y we could meet up.

Hello, Premium, I traveled Sept 2013; there were a number of couples or friends traveling together; I was one of three singles. is it really possible singles are now limited to one? I never heard of such a thing. About arriving early, I arrived five days early, staying at The Grand Hotel (online special 3 nights get one night free). The Grand Hotel is spectacular. I suggest you see the consierge and arrange a 1/2 driver/car and see the city, get your bearings. He will drop and pick you up. I went to Ben Thanh Market, Nhat Quang to order prescription sunglasses, the ATM, lunch at Tandoor Restaurant, and a final stop at L'amour Bakery. Back to the hotel, happy with my adventure and ready to do it on my own the following day. Traveling solo is an adventure in itself, is it not? :)

My wife and I going on this trip in September. We plan to arrive a day early in order to recover from jet lag and to get our bearings. We will be staying in the Grand Hotel where the group meets up. Does anyone who has been on this trip have any suggestions of things we might do in HCMC during the day before our group meets up?
Edna Alvarez Feb 26, 2014 at 10:38 AM

I also went to HCMC [which everyone other that government and oficials refers to as Saigon] early - 2 days. One day I took a tour given by an organization of volunteer students. It is free other than paying for their transportation and lunch. I chose the China Town Tour as the other tour offered seemed to be of areas RS would be going to. The group is called Hot Pot. My guide was great and I am still on Facebook with him.

ps - if you can email me directly should you have further questions, that would be easier for me. Can't recall if RS is set up for that.
