Road Scholar
Program #11586RJ
13 Days | 12 Nights
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Thanks Julie and Connie.

Sandy Cambeilh Oct 17, 2014 at 09:06 PM

Still interested in hearing from anyone signed up for 12/2 trip.

What are pros or cons for using US dollars, colones, or VISA?
Julie Glenn Oct 17, 2014 at 09:55 PM

Sandy, I am going with the advice from a previous post and taking $250 only. I heard almost everyone accepts dollars and we won't need very much incidental spending, perhaps souvenirs.
Connie G Oct 18, 2014 at 09:59 AM

When I went to CR (Birding Off the Beaten Path) in January 2014, I found that most vendors preferred dollars. Also, don't bother exchanging money at the airport -- I found the exchange rate the least favorable there.

Anyone signed up for December 7th trip?

Sandy Cambeilh Sep 07, 2014 at 09:31 PM

Anyone signed up for the 12/2 trip?

Onnafay Downard Sep 02, 2014 at 01:13 PM

I have also benefited from the discussion on what to bring and not bring. I am on the 9-9 trip so I leave in 7 days. Looking foward to my first Road Scholar trip.
Karen France Sep 02, 2014 at 08:38 PM

I hope you are as impressed as we were with the attention to details in organization for such a program. The arrival day in San Jose seems "on your own" until the leader contacts you that evening to fill you in on the next day's schedule.
Sherry Rind Sep 03, 2014 at 01:23 AM

I'll see you there, Onnafay!
Onnafay Downard Sep 03, 2014 at 07:28 AM

I will arrive at 7:00pm, so I won't have a lot of time on my own. I'm going to have a full travel day as I have a 3 hour drive just to get to the airport. I live in the backwoods of the Ozark Mountains. The good thing for me will be the fact that I never leave my time zone.
Onnafay Downard Sep 03, 2014 at 07:29 AM

Yes Sherry I will see you there!
Sherry Rind Sep 03, 2014 at 11:35 AM

My American Airlines flight from Seattle with a layover in Dallas also arrives in San Jose at 7 pm.
Onnafay Downard Sep 03, 2014 at 03:36 PM

Oh awesome we will arrive at the same time. Let's meet up in Dfw. I arrive DFW at 1:00pm. Flight to San Jose leaves at 4:20 so I'm guessing we are on same flight. When do you get to DFW?
Sherry Rind Sep 03, 2014 at 11:06 PM

Mine leaves DFW at 4:00. Unfortunately my itinerary from Holbrook Travel doesn't give flight numbers, so we can't compare. I'll post if I find out more.

Right you are, Julie and buen viaje!

I am off to a RS trip to Puglia and Calabria
on Sept.9th. I'd better start thinking about it.

Julie Glenn Sep 02, 2014 at 12:03 PM

Thank you all who have answered my questions about packing. You have been so helpful with my prep for my 11/11 trip. I ordered a hat, but no walking sticks! Won't be taking any dress-ups, either!
Therese Holtz Sep 22, 2014 at 09:22 AM

My friend and I will also be on the 11/11 trip. what part of the country are you arriving from?
Julie Glenn Sep 22, 2014 at 10:15 AM

Therese, I am flying from Cincinnati to Miami and onto CR.
Therese Holtz Oct 20, 2014 at 09:50 AM

i have a daughter living in CR. her advise is the same as RS. we are coming from San Diego via Houston. Looking forward to meeting you.
Therese Holtz Oct 20, 2014 at 09:50 AM

Carole Sklar Sep 02, 2014 at 09:25 AM

Itwas essential for me. Am avoiding sun. I have a cloth one, made in China that folds to a flat shape. If you
wish to wait to see if you need one, you can always buy one in CR.
