RS says they have to "limit" the size of the group to 54. This sounds like a very large group. How did it work out on the trip?
Sam and Carolyn Kochel Feb 01, 2016 at 06:40 PM

It worked out fine. During the touring, not on the Canal, we were divided in three groups in three small buses. each having their own guide and group leader. I think the number of 54 participants has to do with the number of people to make the boat trip through the canal economically feasible. Sailing through the Canal, we were on Al Capone's yacht, which could take up to 100. Being a group of 54 and the only ones on the boat, made the Canal sailing very enjoyable.
Edward Gazzano Feb 02, 2016 at 03:03 PM

That was about the size of our group and it worked out fine. We went in March 2014 and the weather was fine even if a bit hot and humid. The best parts of the trip for me were the up-close looks at the locks and the trip through the canal. The train ride back to Panama City was nice too. Enjoy!!

The December 2015 trip was fabulous - an amazing learning experience well designed to build up to the adventure of transiting through the canal. It is truly one of the wonders of the world, and seeing it up close with such knowledgeable guides was an incomparable delight. HINT: Take your coolest summer clothes - the heat and humidity will get to you, even if you're dressed right, so make it as easy on yourself as you can. And I'm from Houston, so I know heat and humidity, and they're more oppressive in Panama than at home - even my Panamanian friend who lives in Houston part-time agrees!

My sister & I are signed up for the 2-29-16 tour. Anybody else coming from near the St Louis area?
Pat Gallivan Jan 19, 2016 at 03:49 PM

I'll be joining you from central New Jersey.

Registered for the Jan. 18, 2016 trip. Are others getting
immunizations? RS says not required. Thanks, Charlie

I am onboard for the Oct. 26 - 31 trip after a Costa Rica tour. I am rereading David McCullough's book since that drew my interest in the
Canal years ago. E. Fred Deal M.D.

Please post information regarding your trip when you return home from trip. Scheduled for the Jan 11 trip and would love a heads up.

Fred, Oct 19th post is for you.

Linda Posey Jul 29, 2015 at 06:20 PM

I'm signed up for the Dec. 14-19 Grit & Glory tour of the Panama Canal. Looking forward to meeting other participants.
Casey Rhodes Jul 29, 2015 at 08:54 PM

I am going on the Jan 11, 2016 trip. Hope you enjoy, keep me posted.

Casey Rhodes Jun 06, 2015 at 12:55 PM

Roger, I think you will enjoy the NG covering the present work to improve the canal.

Casey Rhodes Jun 06, 2015 at 12:54 PM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOu8aqE5GN0. This is a PBS program about the history of the building of the canal. Watch it first.
Jeff Sander Feb 01, 2016 at 10:45 PM

Beside McCullough's book, another great book is The Canal Builders: Making America's Empire at the Panama Canal by Julie Greene.
