EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We went from mid-Sept. to mid-Oct. in 2013 and found it to be a beautiful time of year to be there.

I,m looking at this program for 2015. Any recommendations on the best time of year to go?

Their seasons are reverse from ours, so winter is their summer, and our summer is their winter. We went in their fall, March and we had wonderful weather
Thomas Mosher Apr 15, 2014 at 02:01 PM

Just returned from the March/April trip and the weather was perfect; although, we fortunately had dry periods in Sydney, sandwiched between rainy periods. I don't know which was normal - the wet or the dry. We had rain in the Outback; but, that was extraordinarily unusual.

Thanks for the input. I'm looking at Feb or March of 2015 so this info helps.
Dianne Gray Apr 17, 2014 at 09:24 AM

We were blessed with sunny, dry days in the Nov-Dec 2013 trip, which is late spring. The only time it rained was driving to Phillip Island, but by the time we got to the penquin walk the weather was perfect again.

i'm wondering about spending 4 days (given time ) at the kangaroo sanitary island to make sure i see the animals. i signed up for RS to book my flight and now wonder how i will go about making my own arrangements either before or after trip to go to the island. any comments about island and about arrangements. also, does RS set up ways to meet to become roommates? how do we do that? i'm going 9/21 to 10/18..think i have dates right.

Our flight departs LAX at 11:50pm PST on October 12. We live in Kingston ON and will be flying in with around four hours of grace before departure for Sydney

Gary Silkman Mar 21, 2014 at 01:44 PM

Anyone know what time the flight leaves from LA? We need to know if we have to fly into LA a day early in order to catch a morning flight.

Thanks in advance
Janice Hoistad Apr 16, 2014 at 02:10 PM

I'm going in Sept. They booked me on an 11:50 pm flight from LA to Sydney, arriving at 7:35 am, crossing the dateline. Connecting at 9:30 am to Auckland, with arrival at 2:40 pm.
Gary Silkman Apr 17, 2014 at 08:29 PM

Thanks. It looks like they book the LA departures late. That will give plenty of time to fly in.

Chris Cannon Mar 12, 2014 at 01:57 PM

We are enrolled for October 12 through November 8, 2014. I'll be pleased to talk with anyone else booked for the same program. We have been on seven Road Scholar programs, and all have been well worth the money.

Hi - I am Susan and DH is Len we will be joining this tour in Sydney. I would love to have added New Zealand but thats a lot of time away. We have only done 1 other tour China and Tibel - great tour. As others have posted i am worried about luggage and the air because we are using miles to fly to join you all.
Chris Cannon Mar 17, 2014 at 09:02 PM

We will look forward to meeting you. We are Canadian. I cannot imagine that you will have luggage difficulties as long as you don't bring the kitchen sink. Check one bag, carry on another (or backpack).
Cynthia Redden Mar 19, 2014 at 11:50 AM

I was on the New Zealand/Australia program. Loved this program. I learned so much and actually remember it. Our site coordinators were excellent, especially Martin in the Alice Springs area as he had so much information. However, all were just great. Enjoy!

Carry on luggage for Quantas international ... I see limit is 15 lbs and 1 bag. Then it mentions purses, laptop bags, day packs, etc.; but, doesn't say if these are DIFFERENT from and IN ADDITION TO the 15 lb. single carry on bag. WHEREAS, Air New Zealand (which we don't use internationally) says that the purses, laptop carriers, etc. MUST be included within the single carry-on 15 lb bag. Anyone have the answer about Quantas carry-ons? All in one bag at 15 lbs or personal stuff IN ADDITIONAL to the 15 lb bag?

Joan Burgess Mar 09, 2014 at 12:50 PM

Hi Tom, I went on this trip in 2012, and still have wonderful memories of it. Enjoy.

About Air New Zealand. Plane is a small one, so you have to put most stuff in your carry on bag. I believe they checked mine, i.e., you can take little with you onto plane.

I was on the Nov.-Dec. 2013 trip. I would recommend an "ignorance is bliss" approach. Here's why.

Sorry--tried to make a paragraph and posted the unfinished message. None of us knew about the 15-lb. carryon bag limit, which Quantas enforced sporatically. When they did enforce it, they weighed the carryon bags at the gate and checked any that were overweight at no charge to us. I would pack whatever you want in your carryon knowing that you may have to check it at the gate at some point. Most of us had our carryons and a tote of some sort -- back pack, large bag with handles, etc. I just put my purse in my large tote bag and never had any issues. Sometimes my carryon got checked at the gate; sometimes it didn't. Just put any meds or valuables or anything you will need on the plane in your tote/back pack.
