Road Scholar
Program #8577RJ
9 Days | 8 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Coming from NJ..traveling with a friend. My plan is to sit down today and read through all the RS material that's been sent. I'm sure there's a 'to bring' list somewhere. This is my first group travel experience. Looking forward to meeting you and trying out this kind of travel.

We will be leaving Palm Springs, CA. around 7:30 AM on 1/16. I'm told bug spray and sunscreen are important, also lightweight clothing due to the tropical climate. Looking forward to a great trip.

Looking forward to the Jan.16 trip. Anyone leaving from Atlanta on Delta @ 5:59pm? This will be my second RS trip. Thinking about just bring bug spray, sun screen , jeans and T-shirts. Any comments on what you are bringing?

Depending on where you are in Coata Rica it can get pretty cool. especially in the mountains.

My friend and I are going on the 1/16/15 Best of Costa Rica trip. We have both traveled with Road Scholar when it was still Elderhostel. We were happy with our trips.
does anyone know how many there will be in our group.

Tony and Barbara, I'm on an American flight from Dallas, but unless mine is really late and yours really early, we might not meet at the airport. Another possibility is that whoever shows up for the night transport might just say we'll wait for everyone. This is my first trip with Road Scholar, so I don't know "the ropes". Excited AND making myself nuts with what to pack....
Anthony Paul Oct 30, 2014 at 09:24 PM

Susan, this is our first RS adventure also so..I assume since we went through the RS travel agency, they will get all of us to the San Jose hotel. We are from Wayne, Pa.Many of our friends have done CR and everyone raves about it. We are packing casual/tropical clothes that are bug proof. Nothing near fancy.Looking forward to meeting you.

Is there anyone else arriving in the evening for the Nov3-11th trip who'd like to share the ride to our hotel? I get in about 8PM.-Susan Weinstein
nancy rawson Sep 24, 2014 at 06:38 PM

I am also on this trip and will be arriving at 1 pm by Delta.
Susan Weinstein Sep 27, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Hi Nancy - You'll be long gone from the airport by the time I arrive! You'll have more "down time" to look around and meet folks. I'm jealous!
Anthony Paul Oct 24, 2014 at 05:58 PM

Hola, here. We are Tony and Barbara Paul arriving on American at the San Jose airport At 8:41pm. from Miami . Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Just got back from Costa Rica yesterday, so my trip was definitely in the rainy season. Took insect repellent with me but frequently forgot to use. Got a few bites but nothing remarkable. The biggest issue seemed to be the fire ants. So when you are walking and stopping to listen to some commentary, need to be aware that should move feet frequently and be sure you haven't stopped at an area where there are fire ants underfoot. I thought insects would be a bigger issue then they really were.
