See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

I would like to connect with someone who is going on this trip in April. I am going alone and have never traveled with Roadscholar before. It would be nice to know who else is going. Thanks

There is a lot of good information to be gleaned from the variety of posts and I can see that my semi-planned trip this October will encounter some rain. But what about the temperature range? I know the temps vary according to altitude, but will I need cold weather gear? Thanks in advance for any advice and info!

Costa Rica is in the tropics and while it rains, it wasn't cold when I was there in March. If you have a windshirt for sun protection and layer it with a rain jacket, you should be fine. Pack a very lightweight fleece hat (I never go anywhere without one). Also take a shawl (very lightweight) for night time breezes. You can always layer it during the day under your rain jacket if it turns nippy. I ended up buying two shawls while I was in Costa Rica when we stayed near Avenal volcano. I used it as a beach wrap and in the evening. I never needed it during the day. Hope this helps.

Very kind of you to respond; this helps a lot! I'm looking at windshirts and fleece hats on Ebay.

My fleece hat is from Loki. It has a drawstring top and can be worn around the neck, or pulled up to make a hat. It is very light.

I am an Illinois resident and will be going on Program 17988 to Costa Rica on March 10, 2015. Anybody else from the Chicago area going on this trip?

I'm leaving for this trip tomorrow! Really appreciate the comments below; they reassure me about my own handicaps, and they help me pack. :-) Anyone else here going on this trip?

I am interested in this trip - what is the best time of year to go, weather wise?

Nancy Llewellyn Oct 02, 2014 at 12:39 PM

Leaving tomorrow for this program. Arriving not until 9:30 p.m. I do have a bad back, so it's a bit of a worry, but the posts have been a comfort to me. See you all in Costa Rica soonest!!! Nancy
