ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
If you’re looking for a more flexible schedule with ample independent time and several meals on your own, then our FLEX learning adventures are made for you.

We are on the upcoming Feb 3-11 trip. We are from Minneapolis and the warm weather and meeting interesting travelers are what attracted us to this trip. Anyone out there waiting to see if others chime in before the trip?

Sue Ann Barela Jan 08, 2015 at 06:38 PM

Hi, I am going 2/15. Anyone else from West Coast going then. Can not wait!

Maggie Davis Dec 01, 2014 at 10:56 AM

Leaving this Saturday for Costa Rica, Three Jewels trip. Anyone else going on this one. We are from Atlanta, very excited about first RS journey.

Marty S Nov 20, 2014 at 07:43 PM

Judith. I don't think its necessary. I know, I didn't.

Judith Kelly Nov 20, 2014 at 04:42 PM

I was wondering if anyone has considered getting vaccinations for the Costa Rica trips?

Steve Lummis Oct 07, 2014 at 07:01 PM

hoping to open a thread of folks heading on this trip for the November 1 - 9 adventure.

We will be on the November trip and we can't wait. We're coming from North Dakota.
Steve Lummis Oct 16, 2014 at 08:01 PM

Hi Jay! Donna and I will be there with you and we're looking forward to this more than we can say. We're from Maryland and it's our 25th anniversary trip.
Steve Lummis Oct 16, 2014 at 08:10 PM

We'll be heading out of Baltimore at the crack of dawn on Nov 1, laying over in Miami before the final leg to San Jose.

We were on this tour in January, 2014. Road Scholar informed after our tour that they weren't happy with the Rafiki Lodge, and would be changing. I see they haven't done so to date. We spent several days there without any hot water. Make sure you ask for a room close to the main lodge, as it’s a hike if you’re room is at the top of the hill. Snake warning are posted on the paths. The lodge will provide you with a flash light. If you like to eat buffet meals for dinner (and breakfast), then this is the trip for you. Don't even think about going out at night while in San Jose. This was supposed to be a "flex" tour with plenty of downtime. It was, but your lodgings are so far off the beaten path, that you're pretty much limited to the grounds. You do not cross any rope bridge shown in the photographs shown on their website. Ok, so now I vented on the negatives. The positives are the tour guide and driver were outstanding. The other guests on the tour were wonderful, and yes we did see many wonderful sights. If we had it to do all over again, we would have rented a car and see Costa Rica on our own. We were scheduled to do China with them in October. We cancelled and found another tour group that offered better accommodations. Then again, most of the others that have been on this tour seem to have loved it. I hope you do not run into the same experience as we did. Perhaps it was just bad luck on our part. My motto is “you get what you pay for”.

We couldn't disagree more with Marty's comments. We had a wonderful time at all of our stops Costa Rica is in a tropical and rural location, not a city.

My wife and I will be heading down on this program in early November....any thoughts or insights from folks who have been?
Donna H. Aug 31, 2014 at 10:08 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed myself in April. I don't agree with the negatives from Marty.
Donna H. Aug 31, 2014 at 10:08 PM

I'm traveled as a single woman and felt safe in San Jose in the evening.
Steve Lummis Sep 11, 2014 at 06:15 PM

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like this is all about expectations and we're really excited.
