We are signed up for the August 11-24 program and we're really looking forward to this. We love Road Scholar! Our last trip with them was to southern Africa for safaris in Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. What an amazing trip and what a brilliant guide we had! So, we are anxious to experience this "multi-modal trip to Alaska".

As a 4th generation Alaskan, I was one of the group leaders/lecturers for the August 2013 trip. This was my first compete Road Scholar tour & it was a wonderful experience for me. I learned some things about Alaska's history & native cultures that I hadn't known before. That was because Road Scholar had picked some very knowledgeable Native speakers with deep backgrounds in Alaska Native affairs (Dixie Alexander and Joe Williams). I was also able to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of Road Scholar participants who had background knowledge or interests in topics such as anthropology, geology and paleoamerican migrations. My impression from this trip is that Road Scholar programs provide one with stimulating intellectual experiences both from local expertise and from within the group itself.

is there a reason to take this trip in July rather than June -
Helen Sternheim Jul 04, 2013 at 01:19 PM

Look up the weather for thise dates.
Donald Poling Aug 27, 2013 at 03:11 PM

July and August tend to be sunnier than June. Alaska's weather is unpredicatable, so this isn't always the case. There will often be snow on the ground in June in the Denali area, but this varies considerably. This year there was snow & then it suddenly went into the 80's.

signed up for August, have traveled alot but never a cruise. Should be interesting
Donald Poling Aug 27, 2013 at 03:13 PM

And we had sunny weather almost all the time for that trip!

My wife & I want to go on the program that starts May 27, 2013. I found favorable reviews of an identical Holland American tour-cruise program at cruisecritic.com. My sister did a nearly identical tour-cruise with the Princess cruise line in June, 2012, and said she completely enjoyed all aspects of it. Please let us know about any comments you get from Road Scholar participants.
Donna Mcbride Feb 10, 2014 at 09:03 PM

Is there another single signed up for Alaska June 2, 2014 that is looking to share a room?
