Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We have visited this part of the country and stayed in the cabins. Rustic but comfortable. Food excellent when we were there-people drive a distance to sample the famous chicken. Beautiful setting - have been to the cypress area-looking fwd to the intergenerational, our 6th with grandchildren, our 19th or 20th Road Scholar program.

Carol - How old is your grandchild? Have you done this intergenerational trip? We have done 4 with grandchildren.

Granddaughter will be 10 1/2 when we do the trip. We have done 5 other programs; this is the first at this location. We give the children several program choices and they select the one that interests them. Hope this helps. You can search the web for info on this part of the country - Shawnee National Forest and Giant City State Park (IL). There is info online and you can send for brochures also.

Thanks Carol! Our grandson will be 10 in April. I have registered with him for the July 28-Aug 1 program. The area looks great! We may also take a granddaughter, age 13 if we can work out the logistics. We live in FL, grandson in WV and granddaughter in DE, so lots of travel arrangements to put this together. Where are you folks coming from?

We are there June 23-27. Because all our g'kids live near us (all w/in 45 min) we choose events that are w/in a 6-hr drive from the Chicago area. This has worked very well with a nice choice and also gives us an option should there be a reason to get home quickly, which has not happened, yet! We did have 1 case of homesickness and 1 child who became ill but both stuck it out. And with us getting up in years (mid-70s) we want to be a bit cautious, also. Maybe not adventuresome enough, but we've had a wonderful time with their choices. We are fortunate to have them close both for travel and to participate in their activities. A wonderful book the Long Distance Grandmother is a great resource for situations like yours.

I appreciate the tip on the book on long distance grandparenting....I will look for it. Sorry our dates are not the same but perhaps you can give me your impression after making the trip for this one. Yes, you are fortunate to have your grandkids nearby...that is a big advantage. We do the best we can but it is often a challenge to put together trips. We are lucky to have a second residence in WV so that is helpful with one set of grandchildren.
