Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

The Final Info packet says we should bring waterproof pants. Where does one buy such an article. Are they really necessary?

I have waterproof pants from a cruise to Antarctica. Zodiac landings can be wet. Our ship has been used for polar trips in the past. I cannot imagine exploring tropical sites wearing Wellingtons and waterproof pants. I'm bringing Teva's and hope my pants don't get too wet.

Just had my appointment today with the International Traveler's Health Clinic in San Ramon, CA. I already have valid yellow fever, Hep A and Hep B, polio, influenza, and pneumonia. I got a typhoid shot and a TP (since CA has had an outbreak of whooping cough). We decided that since this is a cruise and we won't be spending much time with the local populations that meningitis probably not necessary. I got prescriptions for Cipro (precautionary) and Doxycycline (malaria).

This is Judy from Annapolis. I do always have the typhoid protection current but do the four pills (live virus so must be refrigerated) as they are coverage for 5 years versus 2 years for the shot. Starting to think about our cruise again...have all the shots from a recent trip to Laos and Myanmar in December. Will be on a RS trip to Nicaragua before we depart for Africa. As for malaria, I have done Larium, Malarone and Doxycycline over the years. Malarone or Doxycycline are both fine...avoid Larium if they even still prescribe it. Cipro a good idea...it even calmed an ugly unknown bug bite while rafting in Nepal (no road access). This will be my seventh trip to Africa but first to West Coast other than South Africa and Namibia. Excited!

Thanks, Judy. Very helpful info. I've had all my shots, except meningitis, and I decided to take it, based on the advice of a travel expert who looked at the map. My husband's not getting it. One more Hep B shot closer to departure and I'm set. Since you're from Annapolis, and we're in DC, do you have any desire to say hello voice to voice? If so, my cell is 202 365 8114, and I'm around from 11 am to 9 pm on and off. After that, it's TV time with the husband! Livvie Mellan Shapiro

Still hoping folks will weigh in on whether you're getting typhoid shot, Hep B, meningitis and polio. I already got yellow fever, and Hep A. Other 4 is recommended by our travel expert. Thanks for telling me what you're doing. Livvie (and Michael Shapiro)

Hi from Livvie Mellan Shapiro again.. Hi Judy in California. As I wrote recently, I'm a nature wimp who lives in Washington, DC. My husband found this trip, and though I'm excited, I'm also terrified. Just got my yellow fever shot and Hep A 2nd shot today. Is everyone getting typhoid, Hep B, meningitis and polio vaccines, as our travel nurse recommended?

Greetings, Les & Carol and Judy. I too have signed up for the cruise and the pre-trip safari. The only country on the trip that I have been to before is Senegal. If the rest of the countries turn out to be anything like it, it's going to be a fascinating trip. Judy in California.

Hello, Judy We're glad to get a response. We didn't know if no one else had signed up or if no one had bothered to check out the discussion board. We're very much looking forward to this trip. All the countries are new to us. Normally we take cruises, but cruise ships just don't go to southwest Africa. Tourism hasn't gotten to that part of the world. This is our second safari - The first was in Kenya and Tanzania. It's an interesting experience. Les & Carol
