My husband, Randy, and I are coming up from Tucson for the May class. I am the real camera nut, I have 2 D300s (long story about why) with 50mm Nikon macro and an 18-270 Tamron. Randy has a Nikon P&S. I'm the nut but I think he has the better eye! Looking forward to meeting everybody!

Possible side trips: about midway between Flagstaff and Phoenix are two National monuments - Tuzigoot and Montezuma's Castle - that are worth a visit, although neither is spectacular. Both are about 30 minutes off I-17, Tuzigoot to the west, Montezuma to the east. Southwest of Flagstaff is Jerome, a little artsy town on the side of the mountains. I was there once years ago. If you have a full day, drive about 3 hours northeast from Flagstaff to Monument Valley, which IS spectacular. In Flagstaff, the Museum of Northern Arizona is worth a visit. And while I have never been there, there's the skywalk thing somewhere nearby - a plexiglass platform that lets you stand over the Grand Canyon looking straight down a few thousand feet. I think it costs $75, though. Don't do it if scared of heights!!

Ditto to monument Valley. I have also been to Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ, which I thoroughly enjoyed photgraphing (30 sec exposures). Also not too far away is Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park. I haven't been beyong the south rim at Grand Canyon, so most of this trip will be new to me. Any chance of fall color anywhere? Sycamores or aspens? Anyone think we may need a flash? I'm trying to keep weight down, and that would help if I could leave it behind.

I think it may be a bit early for fall color, sad to say, although I'll ask my friends there and let everyone know if they have any info to the contrary. I've only been to Flagstafff 5 or 6 times for a day or two or three each time. Flash? I'm not brining one because I don't have an external one, and this IS a class on landscape, so would a flash be necessary? I hope not! Maybe program staff will chime in here? I was wondering if I'll have the chance to see some friends there - which night would be best?

I hate to reply to myself, but this from a friend in Sedona this morning: "Friends of ours hiked West Fork (along Oak Creek Canyon) a few days ago and said the leaves are starting to turn in that area. Temp going down to 33 degrees in Flag tonight. Change happening! Perfect timing for you."

Weather sounds perfect! I've given up on trying to keep the weight down, I was wondering about the flash too but I don't want to wish I had it and compared to everything else it isn't that heavy.

Does anyone know if we can check in to the hotel early? At least before 4:30? Also, anyone know the best way to get from the Flagstaff airport to the hotel?

Debbie, the airport is south of town, but only 3-4 miles from the hotel. I have never flown in there, but would assume there are cabs, I'm now getting psyched. I leave Los angeles Saturday, spend the night in las Vegas, then head to Flagstaff (or "Flag" as many locals call it.) I'm taking that route in part because I want to see and photograph Hoover Dam from the new bridge that opened about a year ago.

Hi Debbie i am also flying into Flagstaff airport from Phoenix Arriving at 2:26 Pm and will be taking a taxi to hotel. I am going to check on taxis today. If we arrive about the same time we could share the taxi.

Thanks Douglas and David. I think I am going to try and toughen up and carry it. I have to leave really early Friday morning so will miss that session, a problem with flights. At least I can get my tripod in the luggage, wish I could trust putting the laptop there!

Debbie and David (and anyone else who checks in), can you tell me how experienced you are? I hve no clue whether there will be 12 Instamatics or 12 Hasselblad 5000s costing $10,000 each! I have a Nikon d%000 and have been taking pictures for about 5 years, but only left the "AUTO" setting in the last year or so. For storage, I'll bring my Mac, two 4GB flash drives, and three memory cards: 1, 2, and 8 MB. And a new, but cheap, tripod! And finally, David, where are you coming in from?

Coming in from Charleston, SC. No Hasselblad here (except in my dreams where i have no budget). I've been shooting manual for about 5 years with Canons. I've retired from my day job, so now i can indulge my favorite hobby. I've sold some photos, but do not consider myself a pro. I have a lot to learn still.

I just went over from Nikon to Canon. I have lots to learn, never made any money with photography, love it , love to take photography classes, have only been shooting manual for about a year except when I am lazy and sometimes do auto, wish I could devote more time to it, love photography. I just bought my Canon and it's a lot smarter than me, still getting comfortable with it. I don't have a Mac :(( but a large heavy laptop that I seldom use so I have a learning curve with it to. I'm using Lightroom but have lots to learn with it. I've been doing taking photos almost my whole life, still have lots to learn about making great photos though.

This will be my first RS trip. I look forward to meeting fellow travelers. Although the place is too small for a group dinner, I highly recommend a place called Pizzicletta if you're in town an extra evening - best pizza EVER!

I fly out of PHX on Tuesday morning, so I'll be shuttling there on Monday pm. I think I'll rent a car for Fri to Mon and tour some more. I just don't know where yet. Maybe Prescott? Maybe stay in FLG.
