My husband, Randy, and I are coming up from Tucson for the May class. I am the real camera nut, I have 2 D300s (long story about why) with 50mm Nikon macro and an 18-270 Tamron. Randy has a Nikon P&S. I'm the nut but I think he has the better eye! Looking forward to meeting everybody!

Possible side trips: about midway between Flagstaff and Phoenix are two National monuments - Tuzigoot and Montezuma's Castle - that are worth a visit, although neither is spectacular. Both are about 30 minutes off I-17, Tuzigoot to the west, Montezuma to the east. Southwest of Flagstaff is Jerome, a little artsy town on the side of the mountains. I was there once years ago. If you have a full day, drive about 3 hours northeast from Flagstaff to Monument Valley, which IS spectacular. In Flagstaff, the Museum of Northern Arizona is worth a visit. And while I have never been there, there's the skywalk thing somewhere nearby - a plexiglass platform that lets you stand over the Grand Canyon looking straight down a few thousand feet. I think it costs $75, though. Don't do it if scared of heights!!
David Gentry Oct 01, 2012 at 07:18 PM

Ditto to monument Valley. I have also been to Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ, which I thoroughly enjoyed photgraphing (30 sec exposures). Also not too far away is Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park. I haven't been beyong the south rim at Grand Canyon, so most of this trip will be new to me. Any chance of fall color anywhere? Sycamores or aspens? Anyone think we may need a flash? I'm trying to keep weight down, and that would help if I could leave it behind.
Douglas Haigh Oct 02, 2012 at 11:03 AM

I think it may be a bit early for fall color, sad to say, although I'll ask my friends there and let everyone know if they have any info to the contrary. I've only been to Flagstafff 5 or 6 times for a day or two or three each time. Flash? I'm not brining one because I don't have an external one, and this IS a class on landscape, so would a flash be necessary? I hope not! Maybe program staff will chime in here? I was wondering if I'll have the chance to see some friends there - which night would be best?
Douglas Haigh Oct 02, 2012 at 02:25 PM

I hate to reply to myself, but this from a friend in Sedona this morning: "Friends of ours hiked West Fork (along Oak Creek Canyon) a few days ago and said the leaves are starting to turn in that area. Temp going down to 33 degrees in Flag tonight. Change happening! Perfect timing for you."
David Gentry Oct 03, 2012 at 07:54 PM

Good!
Debbie Bass Oct 04, 2012 at 07:40 AM

Weather sounds perfect! I've given up on trying to keep the weight down, I was wondering about the flash too but I don't want to wish I had it and compared to everything else it isn't that heavy.
Debbie Bass Oct 04, 2012 at 09:30 AM

Does anyone know if we can check in to the hotel early? At least before 4:30? Also, anyone know the best way to get from the Flagstaff airport to the hotel?
Douglas Haigh Oct 04, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Debbie, the airport is south of town, but only 3-4 miles from the hotel. I have never flown in there, but would assume there are cabs, I'm now getting psyched. I leave Los angeles Saturday, spend the night in las Vegas, then head to Flagstaff (or "Flag" as many locals call it.) I'm taking that route in part because I want to see and photograph Hoover Dam from the new bridge that opened about a year ago.
Debbie Bass Oct 04, 2012 at 06:21 PM

I've never been to this part of the country and am really excited about it also! Sounds like the airport is really close, no problem I'm sure getting to the hotel.
Fay Littlefield Oct 04, 2012 at 06:30 PM

Hi Debbie i am also flying into Flagstaff airport from Phoenix Arriving at 2:26 Pm and will be taking a taxi to hotel. I am going to check on taxis today. If we arrive about the same time we could share the taxi.
Douglas Haigh Oct 04, 2012 at 09:05 PM

Fay (and anyone else) if you like, I can give you my cell and pick you up. I should be getting to Flagstaff around 2 from Las Vegas and would be happy to meet folks. There's some way of cotnacting others in the group individually if you go to the "message" section. Give it a shot if you would like to try it.
Debbie Bass Oct 04, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Hi Fay, I"m getting in to Flagstaff from PHX at 11:27 so will be there several hrs earlier, would love to share a taxi but looks like I will already have left the airport. See you at the 4:30 meeting or earlier!
David Gentry Oct 04, 2012 at 11:12 PM

I arrive SAt night. See you all there. Sounds like a fun group! Debbie, you're going to love the scenery!

Debbie Bass Sep 23, 2012 at 03:30 PM

Hello fellow travelers! This is my first RS trip also. Are y'all (I'm from Texas) bringing a lap top? Mine is heavy and I don't think I can carry one more thing. I'm really looking forward to the trip!
Douglas Haigh Sep 24, 2012 at 11:41 AM

Hey, Debbie! I'm bringing my new Mac - I figure there will be a LOT of pictures. Of course, it's easy for me because I'm driving from LA. I figure a small bag for clothes, a huge one for electronica!
David Gentry Sep 25, 2012 at 10:26 AM

Agree with Douglas, I expect many daily downloads. It is heavy, but I'm guessing necessary. Next I need to see if I can put a tripod in my suitcase!
Debbie Bass Sep 25, 2012 at 05:21 PM

Thanks Douglas and David. I think I am going to try and toughen up and carry it. I have to leave really early Friday morning so will miss that session, a problem with flights. At least I can get my tripod in the luggage, wish I could trust putting the laptop there!
Douglas Haigh Sep 25, 2012 at 06:44 PM

Debbie and David (and anyone else who checks in), can you tell me how experienced you are? I hve no clue whether there will be 12 Instamatics or 12 Hasselblad 5000s costing $10,000 each! I have a Nikon d%000 and have been taking pictures for about 5 years, but only left the "AUTO" setting in the last year or so. For storage, I'll bring my Mac, two 4GB flash drives, and three memory cards: 1, 2, and 8 MB. And a new, but cheap, tripod! And finally, David, where are you coming in from?
David Gentry Sep 26, 2012 at 04:53 PM

Coming in from Charleston, SC. No Hasselblad here (except in my dreams where i have no budget). I've been shooting manual for about 5 years with Canons. I've retired from my day job, so now i can indulge my favorite hobby. I've sold some photos, but do not consider myself a pro. I have a lot to learn still.
Debbie Bass Sep 26, 2012 at 05:57 PM

I just went over from Nikon to Canon. I have lots to learn, never made any money with photography, love it , love to take photography classes, have only been shooting manual for about a year except when I am lazy and sometimes do auto, wish I could devote more time to it, love photography. I just bought my Canon and it's a lot smarter than me, still getting comfortable with it. I don't have a Mac :(( but a large heavy laptop that I seldom use so I have a learning curve with it to. I'm using Lightroom but have lots to learn with it. I've been doing taking photos almost my whole life, still have lots to learn about making great photos though.
Debbie Bass Sep 26, 2012 at 05:58 PM

Did I mention that I love photography? :))

Douglas Haigh Sep 10, 2012 at 02:38 PM

This will be my first RS trip. I look forward to meeting fellow travelers. Although the place is too small for a group dinner, I highly recommend a place called Pizzicletta if you're in town an extra evening - best pizza EVER!
Tracy Poyser Sep 19, 2012 at 06:39 PM

Hey Douglas, that's good to know - never been in Flagstaff before. Is it downtown?
Douglas Haigh Sep 21, 2012 at 11:30 AM

It's sort of on the fringe of downtown, near the bus station. It shares space with (surprise) a bicycle shop.

David Gentry Sep 02, 2012 at 10:19 AM

Who is going Oct 5? I fly into PHX on Sat.
Tracy Poyser Sep 08, 2012 at 02:30 PM

Hi David and thanks for checking back in. Am also adding a couple of days (leaving Monday 10/15), but moving from LaQuinta to historic Hotel Monte Vista in downtown Flagstaff after program ends...
David Gentry Sep 25, 2012 at 10:28 AM

I fly out of PHX on Tuesday morning, so I'll be shuttling there on Monday pm. I think I'll rent a car for Fri to Mon and tour some more. I just don't know where yet. Maybe Prescott? Maybe stay in FLG.

Dhyan Cassie Dec 19, 2011 at 10:20 AM

Hi - We will arrive April 29th in the afternoon in Phoenix. Would anyone like a rent a car with us to drive to the program and back the day the program closes?
K Owens Feb 08, 2012 at 01:01 PM

I have not yet signed up for the Flagstaff Course, but might be interested in the ride-share. Where are you coming from? What time does your flight arrive in Phoenix? What about your return flight to your hometown? How many people are involved? What do you anticipate as the costs? Thanks, kayowe
K Owens Feb 09, 2012 at 02:44 PM

Well, I HAVE signed up for this program; I'm debating whether or not to drive from San Diego.
K Owens Mar 19, 2012 at 03:53 PM

...cheaper to fly...I'm coming in and going out of Flagstaff airport (April 20 and May 4)
K Owens Mar 19, 2012 at 03:54 PM

ooppss April 29th...
Dhyan Cassie Apr 12, 2012 at 03:33 PM

Hi - sorry I didn't get back to you. The cost would be around $150 so it would be $75 each. If anyone else is thinking of renting with us.
