This program is worth every penny and I was so impressed with Rick and Sandy attention to us. Besides, I was there to see the Triple Crown winner! The program was well laid out and Rick superbly handled the little glitch that did come up.. We were escorted to horse farms, heard a jocky tell us stories of the Derby from the jocky's point of view, a great Derby historian guided us on how to bet on horse races - what exacta meant, etc. The food was good, the transportation great, the program great, accommodations superb. I can't say enough good stuff and met the most interesting other travelers in our group.

Just returned from the Kentucky Derby Trip and it was so fabulous, words can't tell you how wonderful it was. This was my first time at the Derby, I'm not a horse person, don't ride, don't own a horse. But this trip was put together so well, everyone looking for a fun week , should sign up for it. it sells out quickly, many of my friends were locked out because they waited. It's not cheap, just worth it. Our guides Rick & Sandy were the best. Thank you Road Scholar.

Just bought my hat& I'm putting it in my suitcase. It fits even tho my suitcase is 22", not a lot of room left over but I'll make it work. Remember PINK for the Oaks Race. Anyone from near Phila. going on this trip? Love to hear from you. Exciting! Will Carpe Diem win? love the name. (shelly)

Thought this program really looks good but it has limited space and I was only able to get on the wait list. Mint juleps at home this year.

We are thinking about the program for 2015 and find that it is quite a bit more expensive to fly into Lexington and out of Louisville as opposed to round-trip fares. What did folks do in the past?
Shelly Rosen Nov 08, 2014 at 02:26 PM

I spoke to RS rep at Berea College after I already booked by airfare for 4/27/15 & it was too late for me to change due to the large change fee. The lady said, they will def shuttle you , no charge from Louisville back to lexington, if you choose to do RT in & out of Lex. I also believe she said they would do the same for the opposite direction, in & out of Louisville. Don't remember the lady's same but shouldn't be hard to find. She is out of Berea College. Because I messed up , I'm flying into Lex. & out of Louisville. It's not more expensive due to the fact that there is no NON -stop, must change plans with a 1hr layover. Inconvenient but not more expensive. In & out of Lex, I believe can be non-stop. I was afraid the program would sell out so I signed up quickly. Also due to the K.derby, I booked my flight early, again afraid of derby crowds booking early. If you go I will be happy to have a bourbon toast with you.

Thanks Shelly! We are flying into Lex and out of Louisville after all. We are staying until Tuesday for cheaper flights. Will rent a car and see some more of Louisville/surrounding area. Looking forward to sharing a drink! What are you doing about a HAT? I hate to pack one????
Shelly Rosen Nov 08, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Haven't solved that yet. A derby hat is essential, packing is a dilemma. Will have to think about that.

I am thinking of signing up for the 2014 program and flying in and out of Lexington. However, although it appears there is a bus to take the group to Louisville from Lexington, there is not a bus back to Lexington. Apparently they assume people will fly out of Louisville. Has anyone flown in and out of Lexington? If so what do you recommend? Gracia Barry
PS Also I do not see any reviews from 2013! I would like to see a review before I book!

Gracia- in the past, most participants arranged to fly into Lexington and out of Louisville. The Louisville airport is larger than the one in Lexington. It may be possible for us to arrange transportation for those who want to return to Lexington for a return flight. Please call 512-471-3599 to discuss. We are also hoping that Road Scholar will put the 2013 reviews back on this site soon.
Barbara Wright Nov 19, 2013 at 05:03 PM

We are driving. So we either have to drive to Louisville or get a ride back to Lexington to get our car if there is a place to leave it there

Barbara- there is free parking at the hotels in both Lexington and Louisville. You can choose to follow the bus to Louisville and park your car at the hotel, then join the others on the bus to Churchill Downs on Friday. All the participants who have come by car in the past have done this and it works well. Hope you join us!

I see that this program is waitlisted. How does one go about getting on the waitlist?

Robert Rottman Jul 26, 2012 at 01:18 PM

$1,000 a day! When did Road Scholar start catering to the wealthy? Too expensive for the average retiree.
Road Scholar Aug 01, 2012 at 03:15 PM

This particular program was created at the request of participants. Road Scholar continues to offer The One and Only Kentucky Derby!, program #1463 04/30/13, featuring the Derby race on simulcast at the renowned Keeneland Thoroughbred racetrack. It’s a less expensive program that still allows you to learn all about Derby history from industry experts, immerse yourself in the lives of thoroughbred champions, jockeys, training, racing, and breeding, and examine the world of handicapping strategies and betting terminology. You’ll also enjoy special expressions of Kentucky Bluegrass heritage.
