Same conference call as Shauna and Mary and her husband. A friend who makes greeting cards, blank 8-page books and other stuff using punch-out designs has put together kits with enough for most of the children to make several items and do a little writing--and she invited her church women to pay for the supplies! We also have some card games. I hope everything fits in our luggage. Dan and I will be meeting the group at the airport after a week with our daughter in Berlin. We've been in contact with two Romanian ex-pats, both MDs, who live near us. They echo much of the info in the recommended book on Romanian culture. Time's going quickly--can hardly wait. Judy

Hi Mary, this is Shauna. I was on the conference call with you and your husband. Getting very exciting the more I read about our trip. I am buying small toys, card games and educational books to donate. You have any other ideas? Looking forward to meeting you! Shauna

Shauna, we too are really getting excited about the upcoming trip. I've been reading Romanian history and several novels set in Romania. It surely has a dynamic, tragic past. I have been gathering ideas of crafts and activities to take along but haven't finalized anything just yet. I was able to find a super buy on some boy's clothing - jeans, fleeces, tee shirts. I've also gathered a few simple games and my granddaughter is teaching me how to make simple bracelets with crochet and beads - fun for all. We are leaving one day early so that we can recover from jet lag before strating the trip to the orphanage. We are truly looking forward to meeting the rest of the group and to meeting the children and adults in Romania.

Hi! Good to hear from you. My concern about the donations I am bringing is getting everything there. The brochure said we need to be able to transport our own luggage. I will be the volunteer in Bucharest Airport with the sleep deprived look

FYI regarding luggage with Air France.......first is free not more than 50 lbs. second bag is $100; but if you check in 30 hours prior to departure, Air France deducts 20 percent from the fee.

My husband and I are participating with the September 28 program. I would like to communicate with others who are doing this same program or with others who have been there and have any hints or suggestions for making it the most positive experience possible.
Donna Shelton Jun 09, 2013 at 09:23 AM

Mary, We did the program in May 2012 and were written up in the RS Newsletter. We hve taken on responsibility for the American Friends of Pro Vita Foundation , the US fund-raising organization and are actively engaged with activities at Pro Vita. Please contact me at dshelton1@cox.net and we can discuss one-on-one. Donna Shelton and Frank Doe

I will be participating in the April 20 program, am a woman wanting a room mate, and would like to communicate with that person and others who are going then.
Theresa Higgs Dec 04, 2012 at 03:03 PM

Thanks for the comment, Netti! We have received your enrollment and you will be paired with a roommate on arrival. You can communicate with other participants through the Road Scholar social network.

My husband and I did this program in May 2012, and it was an incredible experience. As a result we have initiated a fund-raising campaign for Pro Vita and will match all donations up to $3000. You can donate directly to The American Friends of Pro Vita Foundation (provitafoundation@yahoo.com), 505 Janneys Lane, Alexandria, VA 22302. All the funds go directly to Pro Vita and will be used to complete a new home for the elderly residents of the community. It is next door to the volunteer housing (Casa Tyrol). So far we have raised $2350. You may also donate via my giving page (Donna Shelton) under United Planet at FirstGiving.com but they do keep a small percentage for administrative costs. If you were a volunteer at Pro Vita you know how much they need the financial help. The community has grown to over 400 children and adults.

Thank you for your continued service to our program in Romania, Donna!

Theresa Higgs Oct 29, 2012 at 02:52 PM

Hello from your program provider! This program in Romania is a great opportunity to interact with the local culture and help those in need. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Donna Shelton Feb 26, 2012 at 09:37 AM

Would love to hear from previous travellers or anyone also enrolled in the April 2012 trip. Specifically interested in details about living at Pro Vita and the work assignments.
