Wow, thank you so much for sharing this, Carole! Just really fascinating /encouraging/ wonderful to hear. We are completely looking forward to it, and even feel fortunate and privileged to witness their fascinating "conversations". Again, thank you so much.

Hi Margie,
I was on the May 6-15 trip to Istanbul and will be happy to share my experience with you. I had expected to be moved and fascinated by the old city, architecture and history -- and indeed I was. But what I didn't anticipate was how vibrant and cosmopolitan life is today in modern Istanbul, where our hotel was located. It was thrilling to see the youthfulness and vitality, the successes and continuing challenges of the secular democracy in this majority Muslim-heritage city. The mining disaster took place on our penultimate day, and our farewell dinner was interrupted when protesters and police ran down the street and many of us felt the effects of residual tear gas. But I never for a moment felt unsafe. Our tour guide/leader was superb in her knowledge, depth, and openness, and took complete "care" of us.I should also mention that before this event, I walked alone in public areas a number of late evenings, and felt completely comfortable. Have a wonderful time - I'm sure you will!

We will be attending the June 4-12 Istanbul program in just a few days. Istanbul sure is in the news! Any info or thoughts on how the local political activities might impact our program? Just curious - - -
Paul Tribble May 31, 2014 at 03:23 PM

Relax, Margie. Istanbul is a big city and the demonstrations have been confined to the Taksim Square area. I did the program in 2012 and you will be well taken care of by the local program coordinators. I know you will have a great time!

I think you may misconstrue our interest and curiosity with worry and concern. Not at all. Simply asking questions.

We are leaving from Boston on the May 6-15 program. We live on Cape Cod. Does anyone know how to find out about who will be joining us?
Carole Friedman Apr 30, 2014 at 03:34 PM

Hi Shawn, I will be flying out of Logan on Lufthansa at 4:40 on May 6. I live in Swampscott on the North Shore and my name is Carole Friedman (don't know why I was identified here by the honorific "premium email subscriber," although it has a nice ring to it! If you're on the same flight, let's look for each other at Logan or in Frankfurt.

Carole Friedman Apr 20, 2014 at 09:50 PM

Hi. Is anyone else from the Boston area going to Istanbul May 6-15?
Carole

Hi. Is anyone else signed up for the Istanbul trip May 6-15 leaving from Boston-Logan at 4:40 on May 5, with a plane change in Frankfurt? Would love to say Hello, if so. --Carole

Hello wondering if anyone is leaving f rom JFK on Sept.23 with a stopover in Munich then to ankara?

David Hall Jul 30, 2013 at 04:38 PM

Hey fellow Istanbul travelers (Oct 2013).
I live in Virginia, travel a lot, have a deep interest in Music (of all types) and many friends have recommended Istanbul, so I am now going.
Would like to connect with a few other fellow travelers before we go.
David
