While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Close [ x ]
Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Roberta -- I'm leaving tomorrow for the May Chincoteague Adventure. Wish you were going here in May! I'm sure looking forward to this trip. Good luck finding someone to share your ride.

As I am driving myself from SW OH to Chincoteague, VA for the Sept 16th-19th program #10545RJ I decided to check in on Sat. the 15th. I am wanting to take a caramaran 2 hr cruise around the island - I have spoken to several cruise tours and most are pontoons or 1 is a sailboat that would cost $110/2 people, able to take out up to 6 people with hands on experience.
However, I also spoke to Capt. Carl at Island Cruises, 2246 Curtis Merritt Harbor Rd, Chincoteague, VA 23336, cell phone 757-990-1872. He has 3 boats, a pontoon, a 27', and a 22' - 1 a catamaran. At this time he has no one else signed up for the cruises but neither did the others I spoke to. The catamaran or other boat takes out up to 6 people at $35 each. Same price for the pontoon, I'd just like to get to go out on the catamaran if possible (or other boat if necessary). Of course, to take just one person out is not cost effective. Capt. Carl stated he will take reservations right up to almost the time to go out; he just needs to know he has enough to pay for the gasoline, overhead. He and I tentatively signed me up for a Sat. 5-5:15pm sunset cruise or a Sunday 10am cruise, either a 2 hr cruise, if others are signed up to go. All captains I spoke to said they are open but have no definite plans to sail; that after Labor Day there is not as many tourists in the area. Most of the cruises were pontoons for $35 wherever I called, although he told me one company does charge $25 pp, but doesn't cover many miles. Also the wild ponies and dolphins can often be seen on the cruises, but no guarantees. Cannot get off the boats however, but we will be hopefully seeing the wild ponies with our Road Scholar program. Please call him if interested - I believe he told me he has a website at CaptainCarl.com - wasn't sure if the catamaran is on his website however. Thanks to all for considering this side adventure.

I am coming as a single (widowed) woman with no roommate. I did call Road Scholar today 9/4/12 and was told they will assign someone to my room if there is an extra person without a roommate.

Here's recent NPR coverage of the ponies. Cut and paste the link into your browser, and turn up your speakers. It's an audio file! http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=139261706&m=139345500

Anyone on the East Coast driving to this program who could give me a ride in return for gas money? I'll be in Washington, D.C., and/or Wilmington, DE just prior, and will have to rent a car to get there unless I find a ride. I'm travelling alone, and with very little luggage. Let's be kind to the environment and car pool!

Located you with much difficulty. Am interested in this program but don't like to drive that far, but I live 15 minutes from DC National Airport and c could offer use of my car if you wouldn't mind doing the driving. What would be bringing you to this area, and when? I suggest it would be easiest if you would telephone me at 703-768-7751. If I'm not home, leave your number and I'll call you. Judy Rosen

Judy/Martha-- Yikes, not sure if you both will see this, but am trying to reach you both. I just replied to Martha in the affirmative, but now I see she is driving out to VA a day early. Unfortunately, I am not available to go early. I am meeting a good friend in Clarendon, VA for brunch on Sunday, the 4th, and have a rental car reserved at Avis nearby to self drive to Chincoteague. But now I see Judy's post which interests me very much. I definitely would not mind driving. I will try to call Juday tomorrow to discuss possibilities. I arrive at DCA on August 30 and will be visiting friends in D.C. between then and the program start on September 4. Hope we can make it work! tw
