my friend Barbara and I are going on the October 7 trip to Tanzania. We live in the Washington DC area. Anyone going from this area?

Alan Siegle Jun 06, 2013 at 01:00 PM

I am taking the August 19th 2013 program and would like to hear from people who have visited Tanzania at that time. Also, semi- professional photography is my hobby, so I would be very interested in comments about photo opportunities. You can email me directly and look at my website too, alansiegle@sbcglobal.net
Diane Witmer Jun 16, 2013 at 09:00 AM

Alan, we just returned from the June 3 trip, and it was spectacular. I expect you'll be very pleased with the photo opps. My Nikkor 70-300mm worked really well for most shots. Of course, if you have a more powerful tele lens, you will do even better, but I was very happy, given my equipment limitations. You'll find the guides very helpful in trying to position you for optimal lighting and best viewing angles.
Alan Siegle Jun 18, 2013 at 04:40 PM

Hi Diane, I'm glad you had a good trip and thank you for responding to my post. Which Nikon Camera body did you use on the trip. I will use my D-800E and I have a 80-400mm Nikon lens that I figure will be the lens that I use most of the time. Did you have any weight limitations that were different than the allowable airline weight limits. I would like to talk to you if possible, would you please email me at alansiegle@sbcglobal.net. Also at my email address, it gives a link to my website if you would like to view some of my images.

Does anyone use a CPAP? I'm wondering if power and/or distilled water will be available at some of those mobile camps...
Clifford Barr May 29, 2013 at 09:38 PM

Diane - My wife and I took this trip two years ago. Although all of the accommodations were comfortable, electricity was only available during certain times (usually from after dinner until bedtime). Bottled water was always available but I doubt that distilled water would be.
ALAN BRUTLAG May 30, 2013 at 10:34 AM

Diane- You can contact http://www.thebatterygeeks.com/ and they will rent you a rechargeable battery pack for $5/day. It is what I plan on using when I go. They will overnight the battery also.
Diane Witmer May 30, 2013 at 10:36 AM

GREAT advice, Alan -- thanks!! Thanks for your response, too, Clifford!

Hi everyone! I am SO excited about leaving a week from this Sunday (June 2nd!!!) for the Tanzania and Great East African Migration. My friends and I will be coming from Novato California (Northern California) I'm going solo but will meet us with my friends and next door neighbors (Sharon and Peter) on June 4th.
We have different flights so will be meeting in Tanzania.
I cannot express how exicted I am. A trip to Tanzania has been on my bucket List for quite a while and the thought of
seeing the wilderbeast migration and the Masaai tribe and the Serengeti and the Olduyai Gorge where Leakey discovered "Lucy" is a dream come true.
Anyway...I'm bringing layeres to wear, pencils andpens for the school (and perhaps baloons -the kids in S. America LOVE them). Anything else I should be aware of? I'll be spending an extra day at the Lodge the night of June 3rd?and early in the day on June 4th because I have a crazy flight because I used award miles and have a crazy flight schedule.
See you all soon.

We leave on Monday and will arrive Tuesday the 4th, Carole. Looking forward to meeting you. I was thinking of balloons, too, for the kids. If you're bringing those, I'll think of something else. Thought I'd do pencils, notepads, and crayons, as well.

ALAN BRUTLAG May 21, 2013 at 05:36 PM

I have just signed up for the Kenya & Tanzania Classic East Africa SAFARI. I would like to talk to someone over the phone who has been on this Safari or the Tanzania and the Great African Migration. We could start out with an Email. THANK YOU. My email is alan@brutlag.net

We are planning to go on the August trip and was wondering if anyone has taken this trip in August before. Any comments or suggestions would be helpful...thank you
Ira Rubin Apr 02, 2013 at 05:14 PM

Carol-My wife and I took this trip last year, and it was wonderful! The weather was temperate; cool at nights, pleasant during the day. It was cold at the lodge at the Ngoro Crater. The most important thing is to have good binoculars and camera. I was surprised that some of our fellow travelers didn't have good equipment. I have pictures if you'd like a link to them; let me know. If you have specific questions, write me at Ira_Rubin@outlook.com. Good Luck!
Joan Slous Jun 11, 2013 at 09:56 PM

Ira, I'd love to see the link to your pictures. I'm going on the October trip

Priscilla Sawicki Mar 31, 2013 at 07:56 PM

We brought pencils, ballpoint pens (collected from around the house), a used deflated soccer ball and inexpensive little pump for it as well as a frisbee. They need anything and everything! The Maasai elementary school had 250 children, 4 teachers—and no electricity or running water!
Diane Witmer Apr 02, 2013 at 01:15 PM

This is great to know! Thanks -- I would not have thought of this, if it hadn't been mentioned here!

Jolee Reinke Mar 31, 2013 at 07:49 PM

Going on Oct trip, could someone from earlier trip please comment on what items are truly appreciated by local schools that you visit? I worked in TZ in the late 90s and some teachers really didn't like unruled 8.5x11 paper because they use A4 ruled paper in primary grades - but not sure that is still a valid opinion, nor one held by teachers / students in the areas visited by RS groups.
