is October/November a good time for this trip?

Addition to below: What is the best way to handle money exchange?
Rebecca Ford Jan 03, 2013 at 11:02 PM

I can now answer my own question for anyone who is interested. Your guide will show you where the ATM machines are at the airport and help you with the exchange. (Some machines don't work.) If you plan to buy a lot of village crafts, you'll need shillings; otherwise, dollars are widely accepted. Our guide was very willing to stop at ATMs on the road when people needed to exchange money. Just let him know ahead of time.

I'll be on the Sept 6-20, 2012 trip and would like more information about the weather in the parks and camps (Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Nyumbu) during this period. Any clothing, etc. suggestions would be appreciated too.

Weather in Kenya is dictated in great part by altitude. Despite its proximity to the Equator, temperatures over most of Kenya are subtropical or temperate (similar to California). There are two rainy seasons; the longer rains take place generally between March and April and the shorter rains between November and December. The coastal lowlands are hot and humid all year around. Casual, comfortable clothing is recommended. It is best to bring clothing that can be layered and added/removed as the weather conditions change throughout the day. The monetary unit in Kenya is the Kenya Shilling (Ksh 1) and the exchange rate floats in relation to the U.S. dollar. The Ksh 20 note sometimes is called the Kenya pound (K£). Dollars may be exchanged at banks, the international airport or at most hotels. Traveler's checks can only be exchanged at banks and are not the most convenient way to carry money. Many stores and restaurants accept U.S. dollars, though change will be given in local currency. Your group leader will be able to answer questions about when and where to change money. Please note that most establishments will only accept the newer “large face” U.S. dollars (printed in 2000 or later). Please check the date of issuance on your dollar bills prior to travel. Before leaving home, consult a "currency converter" that can tell you the rates of exchange between the U.S. dollar and local currencies around the world. Many major metropolitan newspapers also publish such information. A small calculator is handy for figuring quick currency conversion during your program.

The weather during my Sept. trip was beautiful. T-shirt weather during the day; you'll need a light jacket or fleece for early morning and evening. Lightweight slacks or crops worked well. I wore lightweight walking shoes most of the time; overall they were more practical than the sandals I brought.
