With Turkey in a game-changing position now in the Middle East, I wonder when and if RS will cancel upcoming trips. I'm scheduled for 9-28 September, with growing concern about the advisability of Turkish travel.

Victor Moffett Jul 22, 2015 at 01:30 PM

Hey, y'all, I'm booked for 2/17/16, so this post might be a tad premature. Anyhow, I'll appreciate any advice and look forward to meeting fellow travelers.

We are booked for the trip to Turkey September 16 to October 2 - From Legends to History. Interested in meeting online others booked for this same trip.
James Ragusa Jul 16, 2015 at 07:31 PM

Hi Leonard...am also attending this program on those dates....but not the extension program
Leonard Behr Jul 17, 2015 at 08:25 PM

My guess is that you will ly out of JFK just like we do. We live upriver from you near Hudson, NY. Have you been on other RS trips before?
Carol Van Schaack Jul 22, 2015 at 01:31 PM

I think the RS information booklet is out of date on this! Best to call RS & ask. Besides, it is very easy to do online! BTW, the trip was wonderful and we had a terrific group leader/guide, one of the best I've ever had with RS. But remember, you don't meet the guide until you've gone through passport control & that's when you need your visa! So she won't be able to help with that.

I am on the April 22 trip plus extension. I got my e-visa online as Turkey is phasing out providing visas at the airport. It is cheaper getting one in advance ($20) than getting one from a kiosk at the airport (& encountering the problems often associated with airport kiosks)
Victor Moffett Jul 22, 2015 at 01:25 PM

Dear Ms. Schaak, This sounds like good advice, but I've always relied on RoadScholar's excellent guides to get me through. Am I being naive?

Margaret DuBois Mar 06, 2015 at 03:30 PM

The website for Turkish museums, muze.gov.tr/en has lots of information. And if you click on Magazine, you will find back copies of their publication in Turkish and English which can be downloaded as PDF files. There are some interesting articles and lots of nice pictures.
Victor Moffett Jul 22, 2015 at 01:26 PM

Thank you, Ms. DuBois, and I will for sure check out that site.

We are thinking of enrolling in this program in 2016. Since the border between Turkey and Syria seems to be wide open, we have some safety concerns. Many ISIL volunteers are traveling through Turkey to join the fighters. What is Road Scholar doing to ensure a safe trip? This is a dream trip for me and we wanted to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary on it. But are rethinking. Any thoughts?
Margaret DuBois Feb 28, 2015 at 06:11 PM

Linda - My first reaction to your post: No program can guarantee you safety, but RS surely would not plan to go into dangerous areas. Please look at a map. Turkey is an enormous country and this itinerary goes nowhere near the border with Syria. If by "wide open" you mean that it is possible to sneak across the border, that is true of probably every border in the world. Turkey is not facilitating border crossings for people wanting to join ISIS; they undoubtedly cross secretly outside of regular crossing points. In any case, there are relatively few trying to do this and they have probably made their arrangements ahead of time. Turkey is working with other governments to try to stop them and/or track them, and has succeeded in several cases. The media reports on sensational events, and usually unpleasant ones, rather than day-to-day stuff. In any case, lots can happen between now and 2016, so perhaps you should wait until later to sign up for this trip and see what the situation is then.

My wife and I have enrolled for the 4/22 to 5/8 time frame. Anyone else going from the Boston area?

Martha Scotford Feb 03, 2015 at 03:03 PM

I am going on this trip plus extension leaving April 22. I am looking for a compatible female roommate. I am a non-smoking, active 70 yo. Is anyone else looking to share?
