Our tour stopped at Bulbul Mountain Looms outside Izmir. The proprietor, Ertugrul Karasu, is a descendant of the Italian traders who were invited to Turkey by the Ottomans -- a very sophisticated spokesman for the carpet tradition. We got a lavish lunch with wine from the estate, followed by a dramatic expalanation and demonstration of the varied styles of carpet making and an opportunity to buy. Some in our group spent thousands of dollars on truly amazing carpets -- our purchase was modest but seemed worthwhile. We did not have enough free time in istanbul to explore carpet alternatives there, but not sure we could have done better at least in terms of quality.

Would you mind sharing where you bought the carpet - city
and dealer, if you remember - my travel partner is very interested
in shopping and has studied up on it - but nothing like the real
thing

We had a wonderful experience on this trip in September of 2012. Our guide Sami Ozcini gave us thoughtful insights not only into the history of Turkey and the civilizations that flourished there but into the social and political issues of present-day Turkey. Be sure to do advance reading on both history and modern politics/economics to get the most out of the trip. Be aware that some of the visits involve long, hot walks over rough terrain -- and that the food and drink at end of day will be outstanding. Our stop at the carpet "trading post" was educational and carpets beautiful but bargaining seemed limited. They handle customs and shipping and our carpet arrived in fine shape. You will have a great time.

Going on this trip May 2013 - would love to know what is not on the RoadsScholar list of things to take or leave at home - and did
anyone have luck bartering for carpets and shipping home

Susan Luten Feb 28, 2013 at 05:23 PM

We've just enrolled for the September 11 program. We'd love to hear from any others planning to go then, or from those who have gone and have suggestions or recommendations to share.

We are going and we are also taking a trip to the Gobeklitepe following the trip so we are leaving on the 29th.

I don't know why this message isn't listing my name. I am Mary Ann Crayton and my husband, John, are departing from Chicago.
