Just returned from this Mar 18-24 program. Had a great time! I'm sure those of you going in April will likewise have a wonderful time. Be aware that we had two individuals that underestimated the strenuousness of the hiking required. They did not complete the first day's hike and then did not go on any of the others. This program is not for the person that walks two miles a day on paved roads! Experienced hikers will be amazed by the canyon views and offered learning.

Larry, thanks for the information. Susana and I have done hiking in Zion doing the Narrows, Angles landing and hidden canyon which required some scrambling. our issue will be the last day
Larry Kidd Apr 04, 2013 at 09:52 AM

Last day will not be an issue if you are reasonably fit with recent hiking experience. Our hiking group completed the trek back from Supai to the Haulapai Hilltop parking lot in 3 hours and 5 minutes. Have fun!

Hi bob and rick. it sounds like you guys are well seasoned on this trip. My wife and I will be with the 4/7 group and most likly will be the seniors ( ie over 60) group. we hiked angles landing and the narrows at Zion park last Oct but we have some concern about the last day hike out of the canyon. We understand that we can opt for horses. Can you give us some insight on clothing for this time of year for I heard that snow can be present in April. We are currently traveling in an RV and we are in Tucson AZ

I'm training to get in shape for the 3/24 program.... any suggestions? Also driving to St George Utah for the Bryce and Zion program starting 4/1 and have space for 1 or 2 passengers if you are going my way.

Hi Marilyn, it looks like you've transferred into the 6114 program and have deferred your Supai hike until November. A great website for tips on hiking in the Grand Canyon is www.hitthetrail.com Enjoy your hikes in the Page/Lake Powell area in Sp 2013!

Three of us seniors going on the 4/7/13 stroll. In pretty good shape for flatlanders, but a little nervous about the final hike back up. Any advice?

Good boots, plenty of water, patience. Be mindful of the pack trains coming up past you. My wife found walking sticks to be quite beneficial (she is in supurb condition). Biggest challenge is the two miles at the trail head - the rest is a pleasant hike in canyon bottom. Have your camera at the ready. (I am planning a return visit mid-April 2013 so I must like it.)
Robert Kaplan Jan 14, 2013 at 10:43 AM

Thanks Rick. You say you're going "mid-April." That must be our trip starting 4/7, as that seems to be the last one this season. If so, we look forward to seeing you. BTW, we just purchased walking sticks. I tried using 2 borrowed sticks on our Death Valley trip, but I liked using one stick better.

Hi Bob. My daughter, Amy, and I will be on the 4/7/13 trip. I have done some other Grand Canyon hiking, and would just add that some "Up and Down" training is good, even if it's only on stairs. If you only do flatland training you will discover some "new" sore muscles at the end of the day.

RE: Oct. 28, 2012 trip to Granite Gorge, Supai. Trying to find someone knows whether it is best to try to find someone to share a rental car with or call Van Go
Pat Coleman Oct 08, 2012 at 04:14 PM

Hi Barbara,
Pat Coleman Oct 08, 2012 at 04:16 PM

A couple of years ago I took a hiking trip and used Van Go for my transportation. Another couple rented a car and drove. They drove and parked for a week, then drove to the airport and flew home. What feels most economical and most convenient? If you want to drive around the Southwest....then that's different. I look forward to meeting you.Pat
Barbara Snow Oct 11, 2012 at 02:21 PM

I don't plan to do any driving - so it sounds as though you're saying Van Go is the best idea for me?? It was cost that I was thinking of. Thought maybe several people sharing a rental car would cost less. But haven't heard from anyone about it. So guess I'll wait one more day .. then call Van Go. My plane gets into Phoenix from Seattle at 10:31 and the Van Go schedule is pick up at 10:30. I call Van Go and the man said that wouldn't be a problem. To get in earlier I needed to take a flight that made me get up about 3:30 a.m. (OUCH)! I so appreciate that you wrote to me. Barb

I'm going to try to sign off this discussion board as I enjoyed this trip last spring.
Annette Faurote Sep 13, 2012 at 09:20 PM

Sorry, David, I didn't realize my comment was still active. I did this hike a year ago. So, now longer looking for a ride. We had a great time!! It is well run. Great hiking, esp. the Sedona portion that we did because of flood damage. My only problem was that the group was pretty big. And some people sign up above their ability. Have a great time! Annette (from 2011).

My travel buddy Carl Ill and I are going on the outing from Nov. 4-10. We are flying into Phoenix on the 4th and flying out from there on the 10th. Is anyone else doing the same and looking at renting a car?

Jann Bradford Oct 31, 2012 at 09:53 AM

Hi David. I am also flying into Phoenix on the 4th for the Nov. 4-10 outing but I have made a reservation with Van Go to get to Peach Springs and back. Looking forward to meeting you.
