My husband and I will be on the Independent Barcelona trip that starts October 3. However, we will be participating on The Best of Portugal program before flying to Barcelona. We will be in Portugal from September 20-29 and then fly to Barcelona on the 29th, planning to spend a few days taking day-trips out of Barcelona before joining the RS folks. We live in Philadelphia, and have a direct flight home from Barcelona, courtesy of US Airways.

Connie from New York City
5th trip with Road Scholar
Barcelona 04/25-05/03/14

Loved this trip: first time to Barcelona, first independent study tour. Guides Anna and Silvia wonderful and knowledgeable, fun to be with. Taught us so much about the history of the city and introduced us to art and architecture that known only through books. Hotel comfortable and convenient to many places of interest and public transportation. Great hotel breakfasts. Mix of guided tours and free time a definite plus, leaving time for our own personal discoveries. Barcelona was pretty relaxed and easy-going, a real treat in a bustling city. I know I will take more independent study tours. I stayed an extra week in Barcelona, took one-day trips to Montserrat Monastery and to Girona, which has an interesting Jewish Museum.

Hello Connie. We will be on this tour in October. Any tips for a one day trip to Girona. Did you purchase tkts in advance? Also interested in Jewish history. Did you or others visit the Plau de Musica? Thanks. Maurine Mazor, California.

I took the train from Plaza d'Espagne, which you can reach easily by the metro.
Constance Robinson Jul 14, 2014 at 02:16 PM

I believe the Barcelona to Girona train trip is about 2-3 hours. The day before I bought my tickets and scoped out the station, which can be confusing at first. Once you know where to go, you should have no trouble getting on the right train. Girona is a lovely town, the train station is on one side of a river, but it is a short walk to the other side, where the restaurants and outdoor cafes are. The Jewish Museum in Girona is a gem. Very beautifully laid out, and a wealth of information about the Girona Jews lived. An outdoor patio is on the roof, where you will find an incredibly informative and very beautiful sculpture made by an Israeli artist in the 1990s. If you enjoy photographing a large object with wonderful details, you might like to spend a little time taking photos of its many parts.

Several of us visited Barcelona's Palau de Musica. You can take a tour independent of attending a concert, but the concert we went to, billed as a guitar quartet, was actually half music and half comedy act. We loved it.

Last post (I promise). Don't miss Casa Pedrera, especially the roof. It's unforgettable, as is La Sagrada Familia. This is a great city to walk in. Wear comfortable shoes. And have a wonderful time!!!! I'd love to hear about what you saw and what you did when you get back.

Take the train at Plaza d'Espagna--2-3 hours to Girona. The day before I went to Girona, I went to the Barcelona station at Plaza d'Espagne (easy to get there by Metro). I'm glad I did. It was confusing at first. If you do this ahead of time, you will know where to go on the day you travel. Girona has a wonderful Jewish Museum.Be sure to see the sculpture on the roof. In Barcelona, a few of us went to the Palau de Musica. Take a tour, go to a concert, or do both. Don't forget to look look at the ceiling. Don't miss La Casa Padrera. It was designed by Gaudi. Check out the sculpture on the roof. Wear comfortable shoes. Barcelona is a great walking city. I'd love to hear about your trip when you get back. Have a wonderful trip.

Hi Anne,
I'm arriving the morning of April 26, so I won't be able to share a cab with you. But Hi anyway. I wish you a wonderful time in Barcelona. I've never been there, and also planning the week after the Road Scholar week to take a couple of days to see other parts of Catalonia.

If anyone is planning to stay after the R.S. week is over and would like to join me, I'd love to get in touch with you.

Connie
