See our Small Group programs.

ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Hi. I'm doing "Ind. Barcelona: beginning April 24. From Barcelona, I'm flying to Lisbon to begin a week-long R. S. program in Portugal. By any chance, is anyone else doing that?

Kathleen Roth Dec 13, 2014 at 01:10 PM

Hi I was a single on Independent Barcelona and it was great. Barcelona is an easy place to get around in, walking or on the metro, and the taxis are plentiful and not too expensive. Our group leader suggested places to go and made sure that people were comfortable with directions. People did get together for meals some of the time. The tapas bars and the two places to eat in the Boqueria are fine and fun when you are alone- sitting at a lively bar where people are getting all kinds of interesting seafood in several languages or pointing is not like sitting alone in the corner of a fancy restaurant. For the trip over Thanksgiving the single supplement was waived.

That's very encouraging. Another question, on previous trips where I have been solo, they doubled up the single women. But on the RS trip, though I requested a double, they put the three solo women in singles. I'm perfectly happy to share. Not in the room much anyway except to sleep. For this particular trip, a single is a lot more expensive. Is that an RS thing to not double up "strangers"?

I'm looking way ahead, but considering the 9/18/15 trip. Have any of you gone as a single person? This trip has a LOT of free time and meals. Did that work out okay for a solo person? Just came back from the Cuba Today trip. Wonderful.

This is in New Brunswick Canada!!!!

??? What is in New Brunswick Canada? I'm talking about the Barcelona trip in this discussion group which is about that. Above it says "Independent Barcelona".

I was thinking to try and take a train up to Figueres, or Port Lligat, but not sure it can be done on one of our free afternoons. But with evening meal being so late it might be possible.
Sam and Carolyn Kochel Nov 24, 2014 at 07:02 PM

We took the train to Figueres, about a two hour trip on the express train. We went through the Dali Museum. It was an excellent experience and well worth the time and expense.
Sook Hee Scheibner Nov 24, 2014 at 10:31 PM

Thanks for the information! I can't imagine being so close and missing the Dali Museum!
Sam and Carolyn Kochel Nov 24, 2014 at 11:42 PM

Be sure and catch the "express" train to and from. As I remember the local train almost doubles the travel time. Also, there is a Park near downtown Fiqueres I think, containing a very large polished cylinder. Below on the ground surface is a picture of Dali. The reflection of Dali can be seen in the cylinder. One museum that was not included in the Road Scholar Program was Joan Miro, IT was well worth taking the time and going through the museum with rented headset and sound.

Hi
I am very excited to be joining the Barcelona program on Nov 28. I will be arriving a few days early and was thinking of going to the Roman ruins at Tarragona or up the Costa Brava. Anyone have any suggestions?
Sook Hee Scheibner Oct 27, 2014 at 10:20 PM

Hi Kathleen!
Sook Hee Scheibner Oct 27, 2014 at 10:21 PM

We don't have any extra time to spare either before or after the trip, but are really excited about seeing the art and architecture in Barcelona!
Kathleen Roth Oct 27, 2014 at 10:44 PM

Looking forward to meeting you!

Richard Marquart Oct 20, 2014 at 07:01 AM

Hi Folks,
I'll be joining the Nov 7 - 15 Barcelona program. Arriving early morning of Nov 8th from independent trip in Amsterdam.

Bob Quilitch Oct 14, 2014 at 01:49 PM

Greetings Fellow Scholars. I am scheduled for the Barcelona program starting November 8. Anyone else going? After that, I plan to train to Madrid, Bilbao and return home from San Sebastian on November 22. Looking forward to getting on that 747 in Dallas for London.
Toni Kestenbaum Oct 15, 2014 at 03:03 PM

You will adore Barcelona!! We just return Saturday evening. It was a fabulous trip. We spent 5 days in Barcelona prior to the program and participated in RS's Best of Portugal program before that. You plans sound terrific. I was last in Madrid in 1961!

Elaine Morley Oct 01, 2014 at 01:42 PM

Greetings fellow travelers! I'm leaving Dulles Airport (DC)on Lufthansa Oct 3 around 5 p.m., transferring in Frankfort Saturday morning. Is anyone else on that flight, or making that transfer? Would like to find company to transfer from airport to hotel, and possibly do some sightseeing near the hotel Saturday afternoon before we meet as a group.
