Hello again!

This is Barbara and Jan from San Diego,

I waited to reply to Nancy and the Helmcamps until we got closer to the trip itself, especially in light of the Ukraine/Russia problem, but now we are proceeding as a "go" for sure. I hope we'll get some comments from the May trippers. We are flying to Vilnius two days earlier as I saw many things we'd like to visit and coming from the far West Coast, we always allow at least an extra day. Road Scholars wouldn't tell me how many people were booked, which bothers me a little. Rick Steves is easy about such matters, so it's a little disconcerting. We've never cancelled a trip in 20 years of overseas trips, but we're never fans of groups too large anyway. Comments anyone?

Nancy, enjoy your time in Riga and we look forward to meeting any and all of our fellow travelers. If anyone arrives in Vilnius early, do look us up! Barbara

Hello fellow travelers. This is our 4th Road Scholar trip and first international one. We are on the August 24th trip but are flying to Riga earlier for my husband to meet family. He's Latvian and left Latvia as a child during WW II. See you in Vilnius on the 24th.

I am at the end of May....Sorry to miss you.
Sheila Appel Apr 15, 2014 at 12:19 AM

Anyone concerned about the situation in Ukraine/Russia?

Sheila Appel Mar 04, 2014 at 11:32 PM

My friend Sylvia Amato and I have booked this May-June trip. We want to explore some areas of Lithuania to see where our ancestors came from. Anyone have any experience hiring an English speaking driver?

I am also going on this May-June trip. My father's side of my family is from Lithuania. There is a Laugalis, Lithuania and my maiden name is Laugal and was changed from Laugalis. I suspect that is where my ancestors are from. I would love to visit that village if possible. Our guide and/or hotel should be able to help with locating a driver.

Hello fellow Baltic travelers,
My wife Caroline and I will be going on our first Road Scholar trip. As with much of our retirement overseas travel, we are combining this trip with a Habitat for Humanity Global Village build in mid-August in Poznan (Poland). Prior to the HFH-GV project we will fly from Kansas City MO through Chicago & Vienna to Krakow for a few days and take train to Warsaw to visit with an old friend. After St Petersburg, we must immediately return to the US.
Nancy Bikaunieks Apr 15, 2014 at 09:21 PM

Are you taking the August 24th trip? If so, see you there
G Helmkamp Apr 16, 2014 at 09:18 AM

Yes we are, flying from Warszawa to Vilnius on 24 August.
Nancy Bikaunieks May 01, 2014 at 09:22 PM

We'll see you on the 25th in Vilnius.
Nancy Bikaunieks Jun 22, 2014 at 12:30 PM

Hi fellow travellers. We are arriving at the hotel in Vilnius on the 24th. We are travelling by bus from Riga and expect to arrive sometime in the afternoon. Maybe we could all plan to meet and go to dinner together.

Hello!

My husband and I have just booked the August 24th 2014 trip to the Baltics and we live in San Diego. When others book this trip, we'd like to know their travel plans too. We'll leave from LAX and would like as few as possible connections to Vilnius. Also, would like to hear comments from some of you who were on the 2013 trips..."YEAS or NAYS" Thanks!

Wow, what happened to Moscow? Did that just get lopped off the tail end of the trip.? Very sad. Two weeks is a very short time to spend on any trip of this distance; I would strongly recommend taking some extra time, both before and after the tour. There's tons of museums in St. Petersburg, and Vilnius is easy to reach from Vienna, or Kracow, or Berlin, or or or. With a DK guidebook, you can find your way around any big city. Bon voyage!
Nancy Bikaunieks May 01, 2014 at 09:24 PM

Hi Barbara. See you in Vilnius on the 25th.

Janet Bohm May 05, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Hi, Sheldon and Wife -
I'm going on the trip, flying from Washington, DC to Frankfurt to Vilnius arriving 2 p.m. Looking forward to the trip.

Hi Jan are you on the August 24th trip?

Sheldon Gisser May 03, 2013 at 12:12 PM

My wife and I will be on the May 24th trip, leaving from Cleveland, via Toronto and Vienna. Anyone going to be on any of those flights?
Anyone else going on the trip?

Hi Sheldon,
Leslie Wolf May 03, 2013 at 12:49 PM

Whoops, shouldn't have hit the return key. Anyway, I tried connecting with people going on this tour last year, and got no responses at all. Nevertheless, everyone was compatible and excited to see such interesting places. I went to Europe early and met the group at Vilnius airport, which worked out fine. Just wear your neck badge! I know you'll have a wonderful trip.

Leslie Wolf Jan 08, 2012 at 06:51 PM

Hi Joan and Buddy,
I've never tried a Rick Steaves tour, but I've been delighted with Road Scholar/Elderhostel tours for at least 15 years. I like the educational slant, the preparatory reading list, and the quality of the leaders. They don't leave a lot of time for shopping, which is both good and bad. In fact, I am thinking of skipping the Sunday AM lecture in Moscow in favor of the flea market near Izmaynayo Park. I think Road Scholar should institute an International Flea Market tour! The only real complaint I have for Road Scholar is the high quality of the hotel accommodations; I would much prefer simpler accommodations for a lower price. However, many people prefer fancy hotels and might create a stink if everything were not 'perfect.'
Janet Bohm Apr 20, 2013 at 09:22 PM

Izmailova Park is accessible by Metro. When are you going on this trip?
Leslie Wolf May 03, 2013 at 12:45 PM

My Baltic Connection trip was in 2012. I never made it to Izmailova Park, because there's just too much to do in Moscow! And what a good excuse to return some day....
