Hi, Dianne, my friend, CJ and I are flying from Denver. We do have to leave from Deer Lake on the 5:30 a.m. flight on our return! YOu? I met a gal on my swim team who grew up in NF and her parents still live there. Your genealogy sounds interesting!
Dianne Booth Jun 07, 2015 at 03:40 PM

Thanks for your information. Looking forward to meeting you. Regards,

I'm in to the genealogy of my 3x great grandfathers who were born and raised in NF. I'm excited to see the country where they lived in the 1900's. Hope to get more information from museums and the local people. (June 12-24 trip.) Anyone else flying from LA??

Mary Ellen Bernhardt May 04, 2015 at 06:54 PM

My friend and I are doing the Spectacular Newfoundland trip June 12-22. Does anyone else have to leave Deer Creek for a 5:30 a.m. flight back to Toronto and then the States?
Jean Knowles May 12, 2015 at 08:34 PM

There are usually several people on that flight.

Linda Stoneham Mar 20, 2015 at 01:47 PM

Hi from Mike and Linda,
We are signed up for the July trip. We noticed from the video that most participants are wearing backpacks as they walk a rugged trail. We were curious to find out if we needed to bring backpacks and heavier coats and how often we would need them. Also, how many people are on the tours?
Lauren Smith Apr 22, 2015 at 10:55 AM

Hi Mike and Linda! One of the things you'll be receiving in your preparatory materials will be a packing list. This will include the types of clothes and recommended items you bring with you. Also, the video is about Newfoundland in general and features footage from three different Road Scholar programs, one of which involves a few more challenging hikes than you will find on Spectacular Newfoundland. I hope I answered your question and that you enjoy your time here!
Jean Knowles May 12, 2015 at 08:36 PM

A daypack is useful, but not necessary. As for heavy coats, in July you'll be able to combine light layers, rather than bringing a heavy coat.

Re weather: It is often helpful to check the weather forecast just before one leaves. For example, I've just checked the five day forecast, using weatehr.com, and found today is 46 to 52 with 100 0ct chance of rain in St Johns Bay, NF. (We aren't goin until August.) Herb, 6/13/2015
Jean Knowles Jul 30, 2015 at 09:12 PM

Newfoundland is an island of microclimates; the weather in St. John's Bay (a community on the island's south coast near Harbour Breton) can be markedly different from that in the city of St. John's, on the Avalon Peninsula, where the program begins. This summer's weather in eastern Newfoundland has been unseasonably cold due to a blocking high over Greenland, but weather on the island's west coast has been pleasant and comfortably warm.
Herbert Ware Jul 31, 2015 at 11:24 AM

Thanks, Jean. I checked weather.com Wed (Jul 29) and was only able to get forecasts for St. John's and St J's Bay. Sooo, I went to the pages on temp, precip averages in the program material. Your bit confirms: Layer!

Glenda Denniston Jan 13, 2015 at 03:26 PM

Hi - I'm Glenda, from Madisom WI. I've signed up for the
Aug 25 2015 Spectacular Newfoundland trip and am very much looking forward to it. All of my recent Road Scholar trips have been fantastic (a service trip in NW Dominican Republic, a panda study service trip Earthwatch) in China, an adventure trip to Alaska and Yukon, and most recently, a water project construction service trip in El Sauce Nicaragua (with El Porvenir). Anyone want to correspond?

Russell Bryant Aug 03, 2013 at 02:01 PM

the taxi cost from the NL airport, st.john's is about $25 PER Person. that seems to make ride sharing useless for saving money. any comments? helen
Don Lewis Aug 15, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Our first trip. Moons Travel Guide says $28 plus $6 per person to downtown. Gullivers, Citywide and Jiffy. Not the 15 person van, just a taxi. Hope this helps. How is e'hostel so far? Best Regards, Don Lewis
Russell Bryant Aug 24, 2013 at 01:54 PM

Don, this is about our 15th e'hostel trip and so far we have NEVER been disappointed. Usually our expectations have been exceeded. this is however, only our second trip outside the USA; we had an incredible time in Panama, going throur the canal on a small boat. we're looking forward to meeting you.
Don Lewis Aug 25, 2013 at 03:28 PM

Great! Our trip through the canal was on a cruise ship. Looking forward to meeting you two as well. Will arrive after dinner on 9/6

Russell Bryant Aug 03, 2013 at 01:58 PM

we are also going to NL on 9/6. we are new to this social network, but this is about our 15th e'hostel trip. (this may show as Russell Bryant, but i do a lot of the communicating - helen bryant)

Don Lewis Jul 17, 2013 at 04:12 PM

We are going on the Newfoundland Spectacular Coast to Coast starting September 6. Would like to network with fellow travelers on our tour and those who have completed this tour.
Laurie Nevin Jul 18, 2013 at 11:38 AM

I will be going on the September 6 tour. I have always wanted to visit Newfoundland. Looking forward to meeting you and all our fellow travelers.
