I thought I read that cosmetics are an appreciated donation. I have many unused lipsticks I've received as gifts. Are they suitable donations, does anyone know?
John Apr 24, 2015 at 01:00 PM

Kathy, I recently had dinner with an exile couple who left in 1970 and only recently went back to see relatives. They confirmed that any personal care products are desperately wanted and needed, including cosmetics and baby care care products..

Thanks John.

Is anyone else on the 5/19 trip to Cuba going to visit the El Libro English Bookstore? If so, would you be willing to take three books that I can donate to the bookstore with them? Please let me know. One of your fellow travelers is taking four of my books to donate to the bookstore. Thanks for your consideration in advance.

Ann Mueller Apr 18, 2015 at 03:51 PM

My husband & I toured Cuba in 2012 & loved it. I have 6 books I want to donate to the Cuba Libro English bookstore in Havana; total weight is 8 lbs. Anyone planning to visit the bookstore on the next trip? If so, I can mail the books to them. I can mail them to 1, 2 or 3 different travelers in order to lighten the load. They are about Poe, Van Gogh, Lincoln,, Jack London & Las Vegas, as there's always been a Havana-Las Vegas connection. Muchas gracias!

Ann, I am taking 9 pounds with me. I would be happy to take a few more. I am on the May 19th tour. My address is john Schofield, 4534 W. Seminary Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23227.
Ann Mueller Apr 23, 2015 at 03:08 AM

Hi John, The 4.5 lbs. of books are going in the U.S. Mail today. Please let me know when you receive them. There are 2 on Poe, 1 about Lincoln, 1 about Van Gogh & Obama's book "Dreams from my Father." Thanks so much for taking them to the El Libro Bookstore. Ann

I will be on the lookout for them and let you know when they arrive.

I've always just wrapped the bottle in a beach towel or something and put it in my checked baggage. I doubt you would be allowed to take it in your carry-on. About a year and a half ago, Havana Club 7 year old was 7.60CUC. If you are going to mix the rum, buy less-aged (and cheaper) rums. For the aged stuff, I prefer Mulatta, Varadero or Santiago brands over Havana Club. The 7-year old (Siete Años) will be about the same price. In a specialty rum store you will be able to find older, and more expensive, rums. One extra hint - in Varadero the rum was actually cheaper at the Casa de Tabac than the Casa de Ron, for the same brands.

How do we package and transport rum back? What is good price?

We are arriving in MIA a day early for the May 18 tour. I can't seem to find the link to the Miami tour suggested. Can anyone provide this please? We would probably take the tour on the 19th and just play on the beach and walk around South Beach on the 18th with a stop for dinner. Anyone else game for either day?
John Apr 17, 2015 at 02:14 PM

Chris, the Miami tour is www.allaboutmiamitours.com. The phone number is 305-576-2888. He already has a few Roads Scholars signed up for his May 19th tour. He will pick at the hotel and have up back in time for the evening festivities.
Chris Coleman Apr 17, 2015 at 06:57 PM

Thanks john. I put a call into him.

vicki morrison Apr 16, 2015 at 03:06 PM

Anyone on the April 26 tour going to do the tour of Miami ?
