If anybody from the January 6 trip is reading this, and if you took a picture of Jay playing bongos with the band on our last night there, could you please forward it to me? And to everyone else - never go anywhere without your camera!

Jennifer McDowell Apr 19, 2014 at 07:59 PM

I was planning to bring a bunch of reading glasses with me for the elderly--would that be a useful item?
Deirdre Mc Kee Apr 20, 2014 at 06:43 AM

I went in December and I think glasses would be a wonderful idea!
Jennifer McDowell Apr 20, 2014 at 12:14 PM

Thanks, Deirdre. I switched from magnifying readers to prescription, and still have the old ones all over the house(because I could never find a pair when i need them!). I also have a bunch of working(but not brand new) pens, markers and pencils. Useful?
Deirdre Mc Kee Apr 20, 2014 at 12:32 PM

Just about anything is useful. Toothpaste and aspirin are good ideas as well. You will be shown only one poor family, but much of Cuba is in great need.
Susan Kaufman Apr 20, 2014 at 11:21 PM

Not sure what the 'poor family' was, but we really didn't visit elderly people in any setting. The senior center we saw had retired professionals. Art stuff is VERY useful for the students you'll meet. I also brought dance stuff -- tights/leotards--kid sizes. Over-the-counter things like toothpaste , shampoo are good. I brought sample sizes.

I just returned from this fabulous trip! It is a life changer, and you will fall in love with the Cuban people. Next time (and there WILL be a next time), I would pack more donations and simply pay the over 44 pounds charge. These people have so very little, and everything helps. Even if people might have the money to purchase items, those items often aren't available - for example, toothpaste seems to be in short supply right now. Some things not listed in the materials which would be helpful would be latex gloves, sheet music (the adult choir in Cienfuegos would like some religious music by Mendelsohn or Verdi), guitar strings, dance attire, feminine hygiene products. Don't forget your own toilet paper, alcohol or alcohol wipes, facial wipes, extra Ziploc bags, hand sanitizer, and your flexibility cap. Also, an extension cord comes in handy. You might also want to do a few extra squats before you go - many toilets don't have seats - but don't worry because any inconveniences will pale in comparison to the enormous joy you will experience in Cuba.

P.S. If you're going to the english bookstore, Cuba Libro, this was an April 13 post on their Facebook page: Are you coming to Havana? We're in desperate need of teas for our ever-popular iced tea. Peach, mango, wild berry are in the highest demand and not readily available on the island. (please no black tea: CL regular Bill Collins brought us a giant box last visit). Complimentary coffee for donors!!

Anyone going on the May 13th Cuba trip (program 20437) & would like to introduce yourself? I'm from Charleston SC and my room mate is from Columbia SC. Just curious what parts of the US will be represented

Freida McDuffie Apr 03, 2014 at 08:02 PM

Thanks...I had to call RS today with some other questions and asked about that...was told all that was settled and we are good to go in May.

Freida McDuffie Apr 03, 2014 at 10:37 AM

Linda, how did you know about the bank/visa situation? ~Freida
Linda Bevan Apr 03, 2014 at 07:56 PM

It was in the paper/internet news a few weeks ago. I emailed our guides personal email, he said RS should have plenty of visas till it is settled

Kira Dirlik Mar 30, 2014 at 04:03 PM

I just got my RoadScholar catalog for N. Am. and under Cuba is the one I REALLY would love, which wasn't initially on the website. Apparently it was cancelled?

Does anyone know why, or have interest in it? Been on it? It is "The Spirit of Eastern Cuba: Experiencing 'Oriente'". Thanks for any info on it.
Linda Bevan Mar 31, 2014 at 05:10 AM

Very recently, the US bank that processed the $$$ for the Cuban visas withdrew due to lots af admin requirements. They gave a long notice, but officials were not able to find a bank that wd do it. From what I understand, in anticipation of that move, licensed tour operators bought up a supply of visas. But they will run out "sometime". And still no bank has surfaced. I wd lok for ALL these tour operators to cease after they run out of their stock of pre purchased docs. Go now!
Kira Dirlik Mar 31, 2014 at 12:18 PM

Thanks. My schedule was really looking for a Fall trip. I've already registered for this trip, for Nov., but if it can't happen, I presume RS will let us know in time to look for elsewhere in this fantastic world. So much to see and learn, so little time.
