LOOKING AT THE AUGUST 21 TO AUGUST 29 TRIP IN 2015 SEEMS A SHAME TO PAY AIR FARE FOR THAT LITTLE BIT OF TIME IN EUROPE. ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A SECOND WEEK ON THIS.MAYBE WITH A DAY OR TWO BETWEEN . LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS
Charles Niessen Feb 25, 2015 at 09:06 PM

Eema: I took this trip in 2013 and it was great. But before going I, too, looked for an extention to interesting places nearby. 60 to 90 minute trains will get you to some interesting towns: Leipzig, Dresden, Wittenberg & Efurt (Martin Luther), plus some of the Organ masters/composers. Rick Steves Germany has details.

Anyone going in Sept. or hints on how many Euros to bring?
Charles Niessen Aug 16, 2014 at 11:23 AM

Charles Niessen Aug 16, 2014 at 11:29 AM

Paul: If you can, get 100 euro from your bank before you leave. Tt or even in town. But you have to have a 4 number PIN and you must call your bank before you leave to tell them you will be using your ATM card. (Also call for any credit card you intend to use.)he best way to get Euros is by using your ATM card at any bank in Berlin. Better exchange rate than kiosks in the airpor

Paul: Sorry my post got mangled by the text editor . Best to use your 4 digit PIN at a bank in Berlin than any money-changing kiosk.

I see that on June 16 we are to attend the opera for the "Marriage of Figaro". Would anyone know the dress code for this event? I'm traveling light. Dennis
Charles Niessen May 21, 2013 at 09:26 PM

I Googled "dress code Komische Oper Berlin"; found postings at Trip Advisor, translated, saying almost anything goes; tux not needed, decent pants & shirt OK. Even jeans in a pinch!
Dennis Creamer May 22, 2013 at 09:43 AM

Many thanks, Charles!

The program directions for travel to and from the Berlin Airport are INCORRECT! The airport is identified as Tegel, which is right, but the instructions are for the NEW Brandenberg airport which is not operating until at least 2014. In the bad instructions from the airport it says Take tram S45, but there are NO trains from Tegel, only busses. The TXL bus goes to the Main Train Station, then the Brandenberg Gate and finally Alexanderplatz.
Susan Phillips Dec 17, 2013 at 03:01 PM

I am considering this trip and after reading your note about the airport I wonder what other mistakes are listed in the program. This would be the first Road Scholar program for me. Have you resolved the airport questions?
Charles Niessen Dec 19, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Yes; the problem was resolved and we used Tegel airport; the Road Scholar guide were right there to welcome us. The problem is with the citiy of Berlin; they have been trying to replace Tegal for years and it keeps slipping. There were no other discrepencies in the program description. It was a very interesting city to visit and the guides were wonderful..!
