I am also going on the Nov. 11 trip and very excited about it. It took the clothing advice of some previous posters. I am coming from Minneapolis and flying out of Atlanta to Costa Rica.

Robyn Sloan Oct 01, 2014 at 11:54 AM

My husband and I are on the Nov. 11th trip, on flights from Denver to Houston to San Jose. Anyone else coming from our direction?

Nancy Duell Mar 22, 2014 at 03:48 PM

We just got back from the March 10 tour. It was fabulous. Andres was our guide and he is wonderful. He knows every single bird by sight and sound in English, Spanish, and the botanical name. Besides his knowledge, he is a very nice person. It sounds as if RS gets only the best guides. We had no rainy days. I was nervous about the zip line but it was OK and I am glad I did it. We used bug repellent once. There were 14 of us on the tour and everyone was great. Enjoy.
Nancy Duell Mar 22, 2014 at 03:59 PM

Andres is also a great photographer. Bring your best camera.
Jane Schmidt Mar 22, 2014 at 05:07 PM

What she said!!!

Took the Multi sport trip in JANUARY. Take water proof Tiva type sandals, Gor-tex lite weight parka, boony hat, supplex type shirts and pants, only, no cotton. One pair low quarter gor-tex hiking boots.
Trina Haines Mar 11, 2014 at 06:27 PM

Thanks for the recommendations. I just ordered a couple pairs of nylon pants and some Chacos. Can't wait!

I'm also on the April 23rd trip. This will be my second RS trip-the first was a small group, 2 week tour of Ireland. On that trip we were extremely well taken care of, with out guides providing lots of local history/background. If this trip is similar, it should be a very enjoyable experience. Here's hoping it is still the dry season.
Kaaren Jackson Mar 15, 2014 at 05:10 PM

i am also going on the April 23rd trip, first RS trip. Can hardly wait!

Sherri Zastrow Mar 07, 2014 at 04:43 PM

I just returned yesterday from my first experience with Road Scholar. The Rim to Shore trip was fabulous. I loved every minute and I am envious of all who still have it to look forward to. The activities are nicely paced. Our guide, Leo, was well informed, patient, caring and fun!

I'm curious about how thick the mosquitos are what with the jungle locations - did you get a lot of bites? And regarding the meals - are there fresh veggies and fruits at the buffets? Were there generally healthy low fat choices? DId you need to carry your own snacks as well?
Janice English Feb 20, 2014 at 03:36 PM

I did not find a problem with mosquitos. Use the recommended repellant and you should be fine. Regarding meals, there will be fresh veggies and LOTS of fruit. You'll be able to eat healthy, but there will be lots of tempting goodies too. I only needed snacks on flights to and from Costa Rica.
Sharon H Feb 20, 2014 at 03:55 PM

We took mosquito repellant and never used it. I'm usually bug bait, but only got one or two bites, and those were overnight at one of the lodges. Fixed that by being sure our door stayed closed. Fresh fruit is available everywhere, even on the rafting and canoe trips. Pineapple, watermelon, mangos, and banana were always out, and sometimes guava. There were plenty of choices at all the buffets, with a wide range of vegetables and usually a choice of chicken, fish, and sometimes beef. We didn't really feel a need to snack as the buffets left us well fed.
Kat McGregor Feb 20, 2014 at 04:02 PM

Thanks for the quick answers! Mosquitos love me, so I was wondering. Glad to hear that fruit and veggies are available!
Sharon H Feb 20, 2014 at 04:23 PM

Take repellant, just in case, and our guide, Erick, ways suggested bringing it, but we didn't end up needing it. And the fruit...best pineapple we've ever eaten! Enjoy your trip!
Robin Lehman Feb 21, 2014 at 01:41 PM

Hi Kat - Definitely wonderful fruit and I agree - the best pineapple ever. But I can't say there were a lot of healthy low fat choices. Salad items, yes. But veggies often swimming in butter. That said, there were a lot of choices so we could always make something work.
Kat McGregor Feb 23, 2014 at 07:22 PM

Thanks Robin, Thanks for that info. I wondered if the veggies might be like that. I'm sure we could make do, though. Were there beans for vegetarians?
Robin Lehman Feb 24, 2014 at 12:57 PM

There was always rice and beans together. We eat fish/seafood - but not meat. It didn't really matter to us that the food was not that good. The experiences were so great.
Kat McGregor Feb 27, 2014 at 07:34 PM

We don't eat meat either - mostly vegan with some fish. Thanks, I'm glad to know that there will be rice and beans!
